Rear Drum Brake Shoes: Removal
- Release tension from parking brake system.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove rear wheels.
- Remove brake drum retaining screw.
- Remove rear drum. If difficulty is encountered removing the drum, perform the following:
- Insert a screwdriver in backing plate access hole and push parking brake lever toward the outside of the drum to release the shoes from the adjuster. See Figure .
- Remove brake drum.
- Remove upper return spring. DO NOT overextend the springs.
- Remove upper return spring retaining bracket.
- Detach adjuster lever and the spring.
- Pull brake shoes apart slightly and remove adjuster unit.
- Remove brake shoe hold-down springs and pins.
- Remove the leading (front) brake shoe and trailing (rear) brake shoe from parking brake cable.
- Disassemble brake adjuster components (adjusting socket, screw, clip, and nut).
- Clean adjusting socket, screw, and nut in clean denatured alcohol.
- Inspect adjuster assembly, making sure that the adjuster screw threads smoothly into the adjusting nut, over the full threaded length.
- Inspect wheel cylinder for leakage, cuts or damaged boots. Ensure that wheel cylinder is not seized.
NOTE:
If wheel cylinder is found to be damaged, replace it. DO NOT attempt to repair wheel cylinder.
