Rear Brake Shoes: Installation
- Measure brake shoe lining thickness. See DRUM BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS .
- If brake shoe lining thickness is at or below the minimum specification, replace brake shoes.
- Apply a thin, light coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to brake shoe contact surfaces of brake backing plate.
- Position the hook end of the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover (J-38400) under the universal spring and lightly pull universal spring end out while installing the leading brake shoe. Ensure that universal spring engages brake shoe web hole.
- Install parking brake cable to parking brake lever on trailing brake shoe.
- Position the hook end of the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover under the universal spring and lightly pull the universal spring end out while installing the trailing brake shoe. Ensure that universal spring properly engages brake shoe web hole.
- Using Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover, spread the top of the brake shoes apart.
- Install adjuster assembly to brake shoes.
- Install adjuster actuator lever to brake shoe and adjuster assembly. Ensure that lever is properly engaged between adjuster assembly and brake shoe.
- Install adjuster spring. Ensure that loop end of spring fully engages the tab on actuator lever.
- Adjust drum brakes. See DRUM BRAKE ADJUSTMENT .
- Install brake drum. See REAR DRUM .
- Install rear wheels.
- Lower vehicle.
NOTE:
Do not over stretch adjuster spring. Damage can occur if spring is over stretched.
