Parking Brake

NOTE: On new vehicles with less than 50 miles and vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes, press and release the brake pedal 20 times. This allows the adjuster to position the brake shoes and prevent premature wear.
NOTE: After installation of any new parking brake components, set parking brake system prior to performing final parking brake adjustment. To set parking brake system after adjustment, pull up on parking brake lever 3-4 times with about 100 lbs. (45.3 kg) of force to reach the 12th or 13th click position after initial adjustment.
  1. Lift the parking brake lever.
  2. Remove screw on right-hand side of the parking brake cover. Remove cover by sliding it forward.
  3. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
  4. Pull parking brake lever to first click.
  5. NOTE: Do not overtighten screw or it may pull through cover.
  6. Tighten adjuster nut at the base of parking brake handle so there is moderate drag at both rear wheels, when turned by hand.
  7. Apply and release parking brake several times. There should be no drag when parking brake lever is in rest position.
  8. NOTE: If both rear wheels do not exhibit similar drag as mentioned in previous step, check for damaged or incorrectly installed drum brake assembly components, parking brake cables, and/or parking brake lever assembly. Correct as necessary and repeat previous step.
  9. Pull parking brake to the first click. There should be moderate drag at both wheels when turned by hand. If necessary, repeat step  5 until adjustment is correct.
  10. Install parking brake cover. Secure the right-hand side of cover.
  11. Lower vehicle from hoist.
