Ignition Relay Diagnosis (3.1L Grand Prix; 3.4L Impala & Monte Carlo Only)

  1. If diagnostic system check has already been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove IGN relay located in underhood fuse/relay block. Using a test light connected to ground, probe the IGN relay battery positive voltage circuit at underhood fuse relay center. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  8.
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Probe IGN relay ignition run/crank voltage circuit at the underhood fuse/relay block with test light connected to a known-good ground. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  9.
  4. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Probe ignition main relay ground connector terminal, with test light connected to battery voltage. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  10.
  5. Turn ignition off. Jumper IGN relay battery positive voltage circuit and IGN relay load circuit together using a fused jumper wire. Using a test light connected to ground, probe F/INJR, ENG EMIS and OXY SEN fuses, located in underhood fuse/relay block. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  10.
  6. Check for poor terminal contact at IGN relay underhood fuse/relay block connector. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  7. Replace IGN relay. After replacing relay, go to step  11.
  8. Repair open or short to ground in battery positive voltage supply to IGN relay. After repairs, go to step  11.
  9. Repair ignition positive voltage circuit to IGN relay. After repairs, go to step  11.
  10. Replace underhood fuse/relay block. After replacing fuse/relay block, go to next step.
  11. Remove all test equipment. Connect any disconnected components, fuses, etc. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine and operate vehicle. Observe the MIL, vehicle performance and driveability. Does vehicle operate normally, with no MIL illumination and no stored DTCs? If yes, system is okay. If no, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
