Ignition Relay Diagnosis (VIN K & 1 - Regal)
- If diagnostic system check has already been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
- Turn ignition off. Remove the underhood fuse/relay block cover. Remove the IGN relay. Using a test light connected to ground, probe the IGN relay battery positive voltage circuit at the underhood fuse/relay block cavity. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 8.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using test light, probe the IGN relay ignition run/crank voltage circuit at the underhood fuse/relay block cavity. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe the ignition main relay ground connector terminal. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition off. Using a fused jumper wire, jumper the IGN relay battery positive voltage circuit and the IGN relay load circuit together. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Using test light connected to ground, probe the F/INJR, ENG EMIS and OXY SEN fuses. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Inspect for poor terminal contact at the IGN relay underhood fuse/relay block connector. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to next step.
- Replace the IGN relay. After replacing relay, go to step 11.
- Repair open or short to ground in the battery positive voltage supply to IGN relay. After repairs, go to step 11.
- Repair ignition positive voltage circuit to IGN relay. After repairs, go to step 11.
- Replace the underhood fuse/relay block. After replacing fuse/relay block, go to next step.
- Remove all test equipment. Reconnect any disconnected components, fuses, etc. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start and operate the vehicle. Observe the MIL, vehicle performance and driveability. Does the vehicle operate normally, with no MIL illumination and no stored DTCs? If yes, system is okay. If no, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
