Ignition Relay Diagnosis (VIN K & 1 - Grand Prix)

  1. If diagnostic system check has already been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove underhood fuse/relay block cover. Remove ignition relay. Using a test light connected to ground, probe the ignition relay battery positive voltage circuit at the underhood fuse/relay block cavity. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using test light connected to ground, probe the ignition relay ignition run/crank voltage circuit at the underhood fuse/relay block. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  9.
  4. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe ignition main relay ground connector terminal in fuse/relay block. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  10.
  5. Turn ignition off. Using a fused jumper wire, jumper the ignition relay battery positive voltage circuit and IGN relay load circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Using test light connected to ground, probe INJ, DFI and TCC fuses. Fuses are located in underhood fuse/relay block. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  10.
  6. Check for poor terminal contact at ignition relay in the underhood fuse/relay block. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  7. Replace ignition relay. After replacing relay, go to step  11.
  8. Repair open or short to ground in battery positive voltage supply to ignition relay. After repairs, go to step  11.
  9. Repair ignition positive voltage circuit to ignition relay. After repairs, go to  11.
  10. Replace the underhood fuse/relay block. After replacing fuse/relay block, go to  11.
  11. Remove all test equipment. Reconnect any disconnected components, fuses, etc. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine and operate vehicle. Observe MIL, vehicle performance and driveability. Does vehicle operate normally, with no MIL illumination and no stored DTCs? If yes, system is okay. If no, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
