Rear Brake Shoes: Installation

  1. Clean and inspect all brake hardware. Replace any worn or damaged components. Lubricate adjuster threads. Screw adjuster together to obtain shortest length of assembly. Apply light coat of high temperature brake lubricant onto all points of contact of brake shoes and backing plate.
  2. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Before installing brake drum, rotate adjuster wheel until diameter of brake shoes is .020" (.50 mm) less than diameter of drum. After drums are installed, apply and release service brakes 20 times. Check parking brake adjustment. See PARKING BRAKE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
