Removal & Installation (DOHC)
NOTE:
On DOHC engines, remove lifters immediately after removing each camshaft. Store lifters upside down. If left installed, lifters may fill with oil, requiring several hours to bleed down before engine can be started.
- If you do not have access to Camshaft Holding Fixture (SA9122E), then remove front cover and timing chain and go on to step 5) . See FRONT COVER & TIMING CHAIN . Remove spark plug wires, accessory drive belt, and PCV hose. Remove cylinder head cover. Turn crankshaft clockwise as viewed from front of engine until cylinder No. 1 is TDC of compression stroke. Timing mark on damper pulley should be aligned with timing mark on front cover. It should be possible to insert a 3/16" (4.8 mm) drill bit through pin holes in camshaft sprockets and into cylinder head. See Figure or Figure .
- While using a 7/8" (21 mm) wrench to keep camshaft(s) from turning, remove camshaft sprocket bolts, but DO NOT remove sprockets. Install sprocket adapters but DO NOT tighten sprocket pilot bolts. See Fig 1. Remove upper timing chain guide and front camshaft bearing caps (note cap location for reassembly reference).
- Set Front Angled Support (SA9122E) in place. Insert block bolts through camshaft sprockets, sprocket adapters and front angled support. Install and finger-tighten nuts on block bolts. Tighten sprocket pilot bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 N.m).
- Using a screwdriver, pry each camshaft sprocket off camshaft. Tighten nuts on block bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 N.m). Secure front support fixture to cylinder head with two 6-mm bolts. Tighten bolts to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m). Remove pilot bolt from end of each camshaft. Carefully pry each camshaft rearward just far enough for camshaft to clear sprocket.
- Evenly loosen and remove camshaft bearing cap bolts and caps (note location for reassembly reference). Remove camshafts. Immediately remove valve lifters. To install, reverse removal procedure.
