Test D: Odometer Dark Or Displaying Incorrectly

  1. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. If instrument cluster powers up and dimming operates properly, go to next step. If instrument cluster does not power up and dimming does not operate properly, repair instrument cluster power and/or ground circuits as necessary. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION and/or POWER DISTRIBUTION articles in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. If odometer illumination does not operate, go to next step. If odometer illuminates, go to step  5 .
  3. Check darkened odometer mileage reading. If odometer does not display mileage, replace instrument cluster. If odometer displays mileage, go to next step.
  4. Remove instrument cluster. Inspect odometer illumination blub. If bulb is okay, replace instrument cluster. If bulb is defective, replace bulb.
  5. Check odometer mileage reading. If odometer is displaying incorrect or strange mileage, replace instrument cluster. If odometer is not displaying incorrect or strange mileage, check for intermittent poor connections. Road test vehicle to check odometer for accuracy.
