Diagnostic Procedure

- Ensure on-board diagnostic system check has been performed. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Go to next step.
- Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, record freeze frame and failure records for reference. Data will be lost when DTCs are cleared later in this test. If DTCs P0753 or P1860 are not present, go to step 8 . If DTCs P0758 or P1860 are present, go to next step.
- Remove ERLS fuse 10-amp ("J" body) from instrument panel fuse block or AUTO TRANS fuse ("N" body) from underhood fuse block and inspect fuse. Replace fuse if necessary. If fuse was open, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step 6 .
- Check for short to ground in 1-2 shift solenoid valve power feed circuit between transaxle 20-pin connector and applicable fuse block. Repair circuit as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24 . If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Check 1-2 shift solenoid valve power feed circuit for short to ground between transaxle 20-pin connector and 1-2 shift solenoid (internal harness). Go to step 21 .
- Check for open in 1-2 shift solenoid valve power feed circuit between transaxle 20-pin connector and applicable fuse block. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24 . If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Check for open in 1-2 shift solenoid valve power feed circuit between transaxle 20-pin connector and 1-2 shift solenoid (internal harness). Go to step 21 .
- Using scan tool, command 1-2 shift solenoid on and off 3 times. Listen at transaxle side cover. If solenoid does not click when commanded on and off, go to next step. If solenoid clicks when commanded on and off, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect transaxle 20-pin connector. Install Jumper Harness (J-44152) to PCM side of transaxle 20-pin connector. Connect test light between terminals "A" and "E" of transaxle 20-pin connector. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, command 1-2 shift solenoid on and off 3 times. If test light cycles on and off 3 times, go to step 16 . If test light does not cycle on and off 3 times, go to next step.
- If test light is always illuminated, go to next step. If test light is always off, go to step 13 .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 80-pin connector C2 on 2.2L and 2.4L models or PCM 80-pin connector C1 on 3.1L and 3.4L models. On all models, turn ignition on. Ensure test light is still connected between terminals "A" and "E" of transaxle 20-pin connector. If test light is off, go to step 23 . If test light is on, go to next step.
- Check for short to ground in 1-2 shift solenoid valve control circuit between transaxle 20-pin connector and PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24 . If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Check for open in 1-2 shift solenoid valve control circuit between transaxle 20-pin connector and PCM. Repair circuit as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24 . If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Connect test light between ground and terminal "A" on transaxle 20-pin connector. If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, go to step 23 .
- Check for short to voltage in 1-2 shift solenoid valve control circuit between transaxle 20-pin connector and PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 24 .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect jumper harness from PCM side of transaxle 20-pin connector and install harness to transaxle side of 20-pin connector. Measure resistance between terminals "A" and "E" of transaxle 20-pin connector. If resistance is 19-31 ohms, go to step 19 . If resistance is not 19-31 ohms, go to next step.
- If resistance is more than 250 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 250 ohms or less, go to step 19 .
- Check for open in 1-2 shift solenoid valve power feed and control circuit between transaxle 20-pin connector and 1-2 shift solenoid (internal harness). If either circuit is open, go to step 21 . If both circuits are okay, go to step 22 .
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal "A" of transaxle 20-pin connector. If resistance is more than 1000 ohms, go to step 22 . If resistance is 1000 ohms or less, go to next step.
- Check for short to ground in 1-2 shift solenoid control circuit between transaxle 20-pin connector and 1-2 shift solenoid. Go to next step.
- Replace transaxle internal wiring harness. See HYDRA-MATIC 4T40-E & 4T45-E OVERHAUL article. Go to step 24 .
- Replace 1-2 shift solenoid valve. See HYDRA-MATIC 4T40-E & 4T45-E OVERHAUL article. Go to step 24 .
- Replace PCM. After replacement, program PCM. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. After repairs, go to next step.
- After repair is complete, select DTC on scan tool. Select CLEAR INFO function. Select SPECIFIC DTC and enter DTC P0753. Place transaxle in Park and start engine. Allow engine to idle for 5 seconds. If DTC P0753 is not present, repair is complete. If DTC P0753 is still present, repeat test.
