"W" Body (Grand Prix & Regal)

  1. If ignition switch can be turned to LOCK position with gearshift lever out of "P" position, go to next step. If ignition switch cannot be turned to LOCK position, with gearshift lever in "P" position, go to step  4.
  2. Move gearshift lever to "P" position. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using a test light, backprobe between automatic transaxle control 6-pin connector terminal "C" and ground. See Figure. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, replace steering column electric park lock assembly, then go to step  9.
  3. Disconnect automatic transaxle control 6-pin connector. Connect test light between automatic transaxle control connector terminal "C" and ground. See Figure. If test light does not illuminate, replace automatic transaxle control assembly, then go to step  9. If test light illuminates, repair short to battery power in circuit between automatic transaxle control connector terminal "C" and steering column electric park lock connector terminal "A", then go to step  9. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. On Regal, check BTSI PARK LOCK fuse (10-amp) for open circuit. On Grand Prix, check BTSI fuse (10-amp) for open circuit. If appropriate fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, check for short to ground in circuit between fuse and steering column electric park lock assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary, replace fuse, then go to step  9.
  5. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position and ignition switch is in ON position. Using a test light, backprobe between automatic transaxle control connector terminal "F" and ground. See Figure. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair poor connection or open circuit between automatic transaxle control connector terminal "F" and BTSI PARK LOCK fuse on Regal, or BTSI fuse on Grand Prix, then go to step  9. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  6. Using test light, backprobe between automatic transaxle control connector terminal "C" and ground. See Figure. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, replace automatic transaxle control assembly, then go to step  9.
  7. Using test light, backprobe between steering column electric park lock connector terminal "A" and ground. See Figure. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair poor connection or open circuit between steering column electric park lock connector terminal "A" and automatic transaxle control connector terminal"C". See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary, then go to step  9.
  8. Using test light, backprobe between steering column electric park lock connector terminal "A" and "B". See Figure. If test light illuminates, replace steering column electric park lock assembly, then go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair poor connection or open circuit between steering column electric park lock connector terminal "B" and ground (G201). On Regal, G201 is located behind right side of glove box, on Grand Prix, G201 is located behind fuse block on right side of dash. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  9. Ensure all components disconnected or removed during testing are reconnected and installed on vehicle. Ensure ignition key can be removed. Reinstall ignition key and ensure operation of ignition switch is correct. If ignition key still cannot be removed, repeat step  1.
