Steering Knuckle & Hub Assembly: Removal
CAUTION:
To avoid damage to grease boot, DO NOT use a wedge-type separator when separating ball joint or tie rod end from steering knuckle. NEVER pull on axle shaft to remove from hub assembly. Vehicles with ABS are equipped with a sensor ring on outer CV joint. Using incorrect tool or procedure to separate ball joint from steering knuckle may damage sensor ring.
- With vehicle on ground and brakes applied, loosen but DO NOT remove, axle nut. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove caliper mount bolts. Leaving hydraulic line connected to caliper, remove caliper assembly, and wire aside.
- Remove rotor (if necessary, install two M8 X 1.25 bolts in holes at wheel mounting surface of rotor to draw rotor away from hub assembly). Loosen, but DO NOT remove, nuts securing steering knuckle to strut. See Figure . Remove axle nut and washer. DO NOT try to remove axle shaft at this time.
- Remove cotter pin from ball joint stud. Loosen ball joint castle nut until top of nut is level with top of stud. Remove cotter pin from tie rod end stud.
- Using Ball Joint Separator (SA9132S), separate control arm from steering knuckle. Remove castle nut from ball joint stud. Using Tie Rod End Separator (SA91100C), separate tie rod end from steering knuckle. Disconnect ABS wheel speed sensor connector (if equipped).
- Support axle shaft from below using stand, or from above by suspending with wire. Remove nuts and bolts securing strut to steering knuckle. Remove steering knuckle and hub assembly from axle shaft. If hub cannot be removed from axle shaft, place a block of wood against end of axle shaft. Tap against block of wood to force axle shaft out of hub.
