Diagnostic Procedures
- Using scan tool, check for DTC(s). If only DTC P0440 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0440 and P0443 or only P0443 are present, go to step 3).
- DTC P0440 indicates the EVAP canister purge solenoid is not moving when a duty cycle is commanded. Replace solenoid.
- Start and operate engine at part throttle, check if DTC P0443 is active. If P0443 is active, go to next step. If DTC P0443 is not active, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.
- Review malfunction history to determine fault type. If fault type is OPEN/GROUNDED, go to step 6). If fault type is SHORTED, go to next step. If fault type is INTERMITTENT, check circuits for proper routing and terminals for tightness.
- Turn engine off. Disconnect canister solenoid. Restart and operate engine at part throttle. If shorted condition still exists, check EVAP canister purge solenoid circuit to PCM for short to voltage or faulty PCM. If shorted condition does not exist, replace EVAP canister purge solenoid.
- Turn engine off. Disconnect solenoid harness connector. Turn ignition on. Connect a test light between harness connector terminals. If test light illuminates, check EVAP canister purge solenoid circuit to PCM for short to ground or faulty PCM. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, command EVAP purge canister purge solenoid on. Check test light. If test light illuminates, replace EVAP canister purge solenoid. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Using test light connected to ground, probe test light to EVAP canister purge solenoid harness connector terminal "A" (ignition circuit). If test light illuminates, check for open in circuit between solenoid and PCM, terminal tightness or faulty PCM. If test light does not illuminate, repair open between fuse block and EVAP canister purge solenoid.
