Crankshaft: Testing and Inspection

1. Inspect crankshaft for runout:
a. Place the crankshaft on V-blocks.
b. Using a dial indicator measure the circle runout at the center journal. Maximum circle runout: 0.050 mm (0.0020 inch) max. If the circle runout is greater than maximum, replace the crankshaft.

c. Using a micrometer, measure the diameter of each main journal and crank pin.
^ Main Journal Diameter standard is 56.993-57.007 mm (2.2438-2.2444 inch) and service limit is 56.990 mm (2.2437 inch) min.
^ Rod Journal Diameter standard is 46.990-47010 mm (1.8500-1.8508 inch) and service limit is 46.990 mm (1.850 inch) min.
^ Main Journal Oil Clearance standard is 0.006-0.050 mm (0.0002-0.002 inch) and service limit is 0.060 mm (0.0024 inch) max.
^ Rod Journal Oil Clearance standard is 0.003-0.053 mm (0.0001-0.0021 inch) and service limit is 0.063 mm (0.0025 inch) max.

NOTE: (0.012 mm [0.0005 inch] and 0.025 mm [0.001 inch]) undersized main and thrust bearings are available to adjust for correct main journal oil clearance.

d. Check each main journal and crank pin for taper (A-B) and out-of-round (X-Y) as shown.
^ Service Limit: Taper: 0.010 mm (0.0004 inch) max.
^ Service Limit: Out-of-Round: 0.010 mm (0.0004 inch) max.

NOTE: If taper and out-of-round are Greater than maximum, grind or replace the crankshaft. Crankshaft journals can be ground to a maximum of 0.25 mm (0.010 inch). Journals must be fitted with 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) undersized bearings.
