Steering Wheel: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
  2. Position front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove 2 rubber plugs from rear of steering wheel, and then remove screws and horn pad-air bag module assembly. Disconnect air bag module and horn pad electrical connectors.
  3. Place match marks on steering wheel and shaft for reassembly reference. Loosen steering wheel nut. Gently ease steering wheel off of shaft to prevent damage to air bag clockspring. Remove nut and steering wheel.
