Air Bag Safety Precautions

Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems:

• Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag system or steering column component. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
• Because of critical operating requirements of system, DO NOT attempt to service air bag components. Corrections are made by replacement only.
• Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling an air bag or seat belt pretensioner.
• Handle air bag components carefully. Avoid exposing components to impact, heat, moisture, etc.
• Air bag and seat belt pretensioner modules must be installed immediately after they have been taken out of storage. If work is interrupted, module must be returned to storage. Air bag modules and seat belt pretensioners must never be left unattended.
• Seat belt pretensioners and air bag modules that have fallen or been dropped onto a hard surface must be replaced.
• Air bag module is a sealed unit. DO NOT attempt to dismantle or repair it.
• Seat belt pretensioner modules are sealed units. DO NOT attempt to dismantle or repair.
• When placing a live air bag module on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if accidentally deployed.
• After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, which can irritate skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during clean-up, and wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow correct disposal procedures. See DISPOSAL PROCEDURES .
• Never allow any electrical source near inflator on back of air bag module.
• When carrying a live air bag module, trim cover should be pointed away from your body to minimize injury in case of accidental deployment.
• Never apply grease to air bag system connectors.
