Seat Belt Pretensioner

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Ensure vehicle is located outside and at least 35 feet (10.6 m) away from other vehicles and people. Turn ignition to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Ensure seat belt pretensioner is firmly mounted to B-pillar.
  2. Push seat forward and fold down backrest. Remove front scuff plates. Unscrew and remove scuff plates. Remove screws holding B-pillar trim. Remove cover, then detach seat belt guide from B-pillar and remove B-pillar trim. Remove plastic protector from belt pretensioner.
  3. Disconnect electrical connector from seat belt pretensioner and connect Detonator Adapter Cable (86 11 469). Refit upper seat belt guide. Ensure belt moves freely and can retract 7" (180 mm) with damage to other components. Verify all windows are up. Connect Detonator Adapter Cable to Air Bag Detonator Device (84 711 104). Run cable through door opening and close door. Place battery on ground about 35 feet (10.6 m) away from vehicle. Connect Air Bag Detonator Device to battery. Press button and detonate seat belt pretensioner.
  4. An explosion will be heard and White smoke will be visible inside vehicle. Disconnect detonating device from battery as soon as air bag detonates. Because of heat, wait 30 minutes before touching deployed air bag.
