Removal and Installation (Manual Transaxle)

Ignition switch is mounted in the floor shift console. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove bellows at front of console by squeezing and pulling up on bellows. Remove driver's seat and engage handbrake. Place shifter in reverse and remove ignition key. Remove shifter bellows to reveal (2) front console screws. Remove screws and those at rear of console under ashtray. Inserting ignition key will enable shifter movement to aid in console removal. Remove console.

Using SAAB tool, (87 90 370), remove gear lever housing nuts. Label wires and remove from ignition and back-up light switches. Lift gear lever housing up, place on it's side. To replace ignition switch only, remove screws and metal cover plate, (2) ignition switch screws, and remove ignition switch. To install, line up ignition switch slot with tab in housing. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

To replace ignition tumbler, with gear lever housing in it's side, remove plastic cover screws. Turn ignition key from "L" position, two-thirds of the way to "G" position. Insert stiff wire or punch into hole in housing while pulling on key. To install, turn key in new tumbler to same position, and push in lock pin on the side. Insert into housing until a click is heard. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation.
