Camshaft: Service and Repair

1. Remove the engine and cylinder head. Be sure to clamp the cylinder liners down with a suitable tool to prevent accidental breakage of liners base seals.
2. Remove the valve lifters. Remove the distributor and drive gear.
3. Remove the timing chain cover, the timing chain, the camshaft sprocket and camshaft retaining flange, and the rear drive pulley if equipped.
4. Pull the camshaft out from the timing chain end of the engine, then remove camshaft seal.

5. Before installation of camshaft, check the clearance between the flange and the camshaft, Fig. 26. The clearance tolerance is .002 to .005 inch (0.05 to 0.12 mm). The sprocket should be bolted in place with the bolt torqued to 20 ft.lbs. Use of a new flange is required.
6. Remove sprocket and flange and install camshaft in engine.
7. Install camshaft thrust plate and torque bolts to 6 ft.lbs.
8. Install timing chain, chain tensioner and timing chain cover as outlined.
9. Install camshaft rear seal using suitable driver, then install pullet, if equipped.
10. Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation and note the following:
a. Turn the engine to bring the No. 1 cylinder to firing position (No. 1 cylinder is at the flywheel end of the engine).

b. Insert distributor drive gear using a bolt (12 mm diameter-175 pitch). Install with the largest offset (D) facing the clutch and the slot at right angles to the camshaft, Fig. 27.

Camshaft Oil Seal, Replace

The camshaft oil seal can be replaced without the engine or the camshaft being removed. Changing the seal requires removal of the air filter and support bracket, the air pump and support bracket, and the camshaft drive pulley, as equipped. The use of Renault Tool Mot. 500-01 is required.

1. Remove the components listed above. Cover the opening in the bellhousing with a rag.

2. Put the Mot. 500-01 extracting tool in position and push it in all the way until the lip of the oil seal slips over the shoulder of the tool. Push sleeve (B) fully in, Fig. 28.
3. Extract the seal by tightening the screw on the tool.
4. Lubricate new oil seal, position the sleeve on the end of the camshaft and push the seal onto the sleeve.
5. Press the seal into position with the inserting tool until the seal just touches the block.

6. Using a threaded rod and nut or bolt, together with a washer, draw the tool and seal onto the camshaft until the tool just touches the block, Fig. 29.
7. Install the camshaft drive pulley. Install a new water pump/air pump drive belt and tighten the air pump.
