Calibrating The Levelling System

NOTE: Voltage drop 
  • Irreparable damage to control unit 
  • Damage to control unit 
  • Fault entries in the control unit 
  • Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
  • Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming/coding 

    → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.

    → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.

    → Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

  1. Move ready-to-drive vehicle (with tyre repair kit or spare wheel and tools) onto the measuring platform ("floating").

    Information 

    Mounting surfaces on wheel and adapters must be clean and flat.

  2. Fit > VAS 6918 - quick-clamping device  on the wheels.
    1. 2.1 Remove hub cap.

      > 441519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING HUB CAPS - information on "Removing".

    2. 2.2 Position > VAS 6918 - quick-clamping device  with the claws first in the centre of the rim and clamp it in the rim by turning the tension ring clockwise.
  3. Apply electric parking brake. The vehicle must be positioned on the floating plates without tension! 
  4. Close the doors and tailgate.
  5. Measure the actual height of the vehicle body.
    1. 5.1 Measure the height at the front and rear axle > Dimension from upper edge of measured-value pickup to lower edge of wing (shown as an example)  .
    2. 5.2 Add -dimension X-  to measured-value pickup radius 32.5 mm  .

    Example of vehicle with air springs (front axle):  371.5 mm (-dimension X-  ) + 32.5 mm (measured-value pickup radius) = 404 mm

    Information 

    A height value you entered might not be accepted by the PIWIS Tester  . In this case, at least one value is implausible and is not within the tolerance range stored in the control unit.

  6. Calibrate height sensors.
    1. 6.1 Connect the PIWIS Tester  to the vehicle and switch on the PIWIS Tester  .
    2. 6.2 Start diagnostics.
    3. 6.3 Select "Chassis control"  control unit.
    4. 6.4 Select the "Maintenance/repairs"  tab.
    5. 6.5 Select the menu item "Height sensor calibration"  and press F12 to continue.
    6. 6.6 Follow the instructions on the Tester.

    Information 

    The PIWIS Tester  accepts height values with a required value tolerance of +/- 20 mm. If the mean value is not within this tolerance range, the limit value that is closer to the tolerance range must be entered in the PIWIS Tester  .

  7. Only if the actual value is not accepted: 

Measure the actual height of the vehicle body again.

  1. 7.1 If the measured values are identical, check level sensors for damage. Check, in particular, that the linkage or holders are not bent.
    1. 7.1.1 Only if level sensors are defective: 

      Replace level sensors and repeat calibration.

      > 431819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT LEVEL SENSOR .

      > 431919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR LEVEL SENSOR .

    2. 7.1.2 Only if level sensors are intact: 

      Enter the mean value determined from the actual and required value.
