Measuring Piston-Ring End Clearance

  1. Insert piston ring into the cylinder from the top to about 15 mm from the lower edge of the cylinder at a right angle to the cylinder wall.

    Use a piston with no piston rings to slide it in.

  2. Measure piston-ring end clearance.

    1. 2.1 Guide a feeler gauge into the gap on the piston ring and determine the value > Piston-ring end clearance 
Piston ring New in mm Wear limit
1st compression ring 0.15-0.25 0.35
2nd compression ring 0.30-0.45 0.55
Oil scraper ring Cannot be measured -
