Replacing Control Unit For Front-End Electronics

NOTE: Voltage drop 
  • Irreparable damage to control unit 
  • Damage to control unit 
  • Fault entries in the control unit 
  • Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
  • Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming/coding 

    → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.

    → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.

    → Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

If Home Link/garage door opener is installed on the vehicle, the garage door remote controls must be re-taught to the vehicle after replacing the front-end electronics. See the relevant Service Information.

The customer needs to have the garage door remote controls for this purpose.

If the front-end electronics coding/programming cannot be read out, the customer-specific settings must be queried or entered together with the customer.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester  .

  1. Call up the Car menu in the instrument cluster in the vehicle. 

    Read out customer-specific settings in the menu Locking, Light & Visibility, Seat adjustment and Steering wheel button  and write them down.

  2. Switch off the ignition.
  3. Replace control unit for front-end electronics.

  4. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
  5. Place original remote control (hand-held transmitter) in emergency start tray.

  6. Select the vehicle type if required.
  7. Select the Front-end electronics  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
  8. Coding/programming  must be selected.
  9. Automatic coding  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  10. The Tester displays the message: Coding completed successfully. Press F12 to continue.
  11. Perform ignition reset.
    1. 11.1 Switch off the ignition.
    2. 11.2 Disconnect VCI module and PIWIS Tester from the vehicle.
    3. 11.3 Switch off the charger and disconnect it.
    4. 11.4 Close all lids and doors.
    5. 11.5 Lock the vehicle.
    6. 11.6 Wait 2 minutes. (Parking brake LED goes off).
    7. 11.7 Open the vehicle and connect VCI module and PIWIS Tester.
    8. 11.8 Connect a charger.
    9. 11.9 Switch on the ignition.

    Only for vehicles from MY 2018 and I-number IY2, as well as all vehicles from MY 2019 

  12. In the overview  , switch to the Additional menu  with F7.
  13. Select the Component protection start-up  function in the Additional menu  . Follow instructions and procedure.
  14. Enter the PPN user name and password. 
  15. Allow the Tester to run the procedure.
  16. Check the chassis number. Enter the order number. Press F12 to continue.
  17. Allow the Tester to run the procedure.
  18. The Tester displays the message: Component protection taught  . Press F12 to continue.
  19. Go back to the overview  . Press F11 to continue.

    All vehicles 

  20. Select the Front-end electronics  control unit in the overview  .
  21. Drive links/checks  must be selected.
  22. Select General  . Press F12 to continue.
  23. Reset to factory settings  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  24. Allow the Tester to run the procedure.
  25. Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
  26. Teach headlight beam adjustment  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  27. Read and follow the information and instructions on the Tester. Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.

    If fitted: Teach electric steering column adjustment.

  28. Teach steering column adjustment  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  29. Read and follow the information and instructions on the Tester. Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
  30. Read out fault memory and erase it if necessary.
  31. Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
  32. Close all lids and doors. Lock the vehicle using the remote control (hand-held transmitter). Wait for 60 seconds after the Coming Home and courtesy lights  have switched off. Unlock the vehicle using the remote control (hand-held transmitter).
  33. Call up the Car  menu in the instrument cluster in the vehicle  .

    Select and reset the customer-specific settings you read out earlier in the menu Locking, Light & Visibility, Seat adjustment and Steering wheel button  .

  34. Carry out a function test.
