Removing Turbocharger

NOTE:
Dirt and contamination
- Risk of damage to units or components
→ Protect components from dirt and contamination.
→ Clean or replace dirty components.
- To remove the left turbocharger, loosen the connecting clamp for the primary catalytic converter at the left.
- Turbocharger on right-hand side: Disconnect vent line -1- on the oil separator -2- , pull off vacuum hose -3- on the vacuum modulator and disconnect cable plug -4- on the diverter valve.
- For replacing turbochargers: Separate positive crankcase ventilation hose.

Right turbocharger: Oil separator vent line, vacuum hose, cable plug on diverter valve
- Turbocharger on left-hand side:
Pull off vacuum hose -1-
on the vacuum modulator and disconnect cable plug -2-
on the diverter valve.
Left turbocharger: Vacuum hose and cable plug on diverter valve
Information
- Clean all line connections carefully and close them off or cover them.
- Use suitable stoppers for closing off lines.
- Remove oil pipe -1-
supply line.
- 5.1 Unscrew screw -2- at the front and remove screw using a bar magnet.
- 5.2 Unscrew rear screws -3- .
- 5.3 Lift cover plates on the coolant lines using a wedge and pull them up -Arrows- .
- 5.4 Disconnect oil pipes on the turbocharger. Collect escaping oil.
- 5.5 Disconnect oil pipe at the front. Collect escaping oil.
- 5.6 Replace O-rings.
Oil pipes supply line
- Disconnect front oil pipes return -1-
at the front.
- 6.1 Unscrew screw -2- and remove it using a bar magnet.
- 6.2 First disconnect the line for the turbocharger on bank 1-4; the flange secures the line for the turbocharger on bank 5-8.
Return oil pipes
- Unscrew screw for retainer plate for coolant lines -2 and 3-
at the rear.
- 7.1 Unscrew screws -1- .
- 7.2 Remove retainer plate -4- and disconnect coolant lines. Catch escaping coolant.
- 7.3 Replace O-rings.
Mounting for turbocharger coolant lines
- Loosen connecting clamp -1-
for the exhaust manifold.
Tool: long socket-wrench insert (a/f 13) required!
- 8.1 Unscrew hexagon nut -2- on the connecting clamp.

- Remove turbocharger and carefully disconnect and close off the front oil pipe. Collect escaping oil.
- 9.1 Replace O-rings.
- Replace gaskets -1-
and connecting clamps -3-
on the exhaust manifold -2- .

- Carefully clean sealing faces, line connections and adjacent areas.
