Replacing Valve-Stem Seals (Cylinder Head Removed)

- > VAS 6419 - Insert cylinder head tensioning device-4-
into the > VAS 6095A - engine and gearbox bracket-3-
and secure with the holders VAS6419/1 -1-
and VAS6419/2 -2-
- 1.1 Cylinder head tensioning device must now be connected to compressed air.
- 1.2 Using the lever -Arrow- , push the air cushion under the combustion chamber on which you want to remove the valve stem seal.
- 1.3 Allow as much compressed air as required to flow into the air cushion until it is touching the valve discs.

- > VAS 5161A/43 - Guide plate-1-
must now be secured on the cylinder head.
- 2.1 > VAS 5161A/43 - Guide plate-1- on the cylinder head must be aligned above the relevant combustion chamber. Observe markings A - Outlet side/E - Intake side while doing this.
- 2.2 Tighten screws -Arrows- to > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.6 ftlb.) .
- 2.3 Fit punch VAS 5161/3A -2- from tool set > VAS 5161A - Removal and installation device for valve keys on the valve-spring plate and loosen any tight valve keys by tapping them with a plastic hammer.
Guide plate on cylinder head
- Remove valve springs using > VAS 5161A - removal and installation device for valve cotters
.
- 3.1 Screw retainer VAS 5161/6 -2- with guided fork and M8 threaded bolt VAS 5161/5 -3- into the guide plate.
- 3.2 Insert assembly cartridge VAS 5161/8A -4- into the bore over the valve spring to be removed.
- 3.3 Engage pressure fork VAS 5161/2 -1- in the retainer VAS 5161/6 -2- and press assembly cartridge down.
- 3.4 At the same time, turn the knurled screw -Arrow- on the assembly cartridge clockwise until the tips engage in the valve collets.
- 3.5 Turn the knurled screw -Arrow-
back and forth to press the valve collets apart and capture them in the assembly cartridge.
The knurled screw slips as far as it will go into the assembly cartridge.
- 3.6 Relieve tension on pressure fork VAS 5161/2 -1-
and remove assembly cartridge VAS 5161/8A -4-
.
- 3.6.1 Remove valve keys from the assembly cartridge.
Removing valve keys
- Pull off valve-stem seal to be replaced using the puller > 3364 - Valve stem seal puller-1-
.
Removal of valve-stem seal
- Installation of new valve-stem seal:
- 5.1 To avoid damaging the new valve-stem seal -2- during installation, fit the assembly sleeve -1- on the valve stem.
- 5.2 Lightly oil the sealing lip on the valve-stem seal.
- 5.3 Insert valve-stem seal -2- into the > 3365 - press-on tool-3- and carefully press it over the assembly sleeve -1- as far as it will go onto the valve guide.
- 5.4 Remove assembly sleeve -1- .
Installing valve-stem seal
- Insert valve springs and valve-spring plates in their original position. Observe installation positions.
- Install valve keys.
- 7.1 Insert assembly cartridge VAS 5161/8A -4- into the > VAS 5161A/43 - guide plate .
- 7.2 Press pressure fork VAS 5161/2 -1- down, pull knurled screw -Arrow- on the assembly cartridge VAS 5161/8A -4- upwards by turning it back and forth, thereby inserting the valve collets.
- 7.3 Relieve pressure on the pressure fork VAS 5161/2 -1- whilst pulling on the knurled screw.
Installation of the valve keys
- Do the same on the other cylinders. When all valve-stem seals have been replaced, remove the special tools from the cylinder head.
