Repairing Antenna Cable

  1. Determine the antenna line system of the affected antenna cable.

    Use gauge -3-  from the > VAS 6720 - antenna line repair kit  to check which antenna line system is used in the antenna cable that is to be repaired.

    Antenna line system gauge

    1  Antenna line system RG-174 = blue
    2  Antenna line system RTK-031 = black
  2. Fit stripping tool -1-  on crimping pliers -2-  from the > VAS 6720 - repair kit for antenna lines  in -Arrow direction-  .

    Stripping tool on crimping pliers

    1. 2.1  Unlock pins -3-  .
    2. 2.2 For antenna line system RTK-031: 

      Fit VAS 6720/1  stripping tool RTK-031 on crimping pliers -2-  .

    3. 2.3  For antenna line system RG 174:

      Fit VAS 6720/3  stripping tool RG-174 on crimping pliers -2-  .

    4. 2.4  Lock pins -3-  .
  3. When repairing a section:

    Remove the corresponding antenna cable for antenna line system RTK-031 or RG-174 from the > VAS 6720 - antenna line repair kit  and shorten it to the required length.

  4. Cut antenna cable -2-  .

    1. 4.1  Position antenna cable -2-  in the cutting tool for VAS 6720/1 or VAS 6720/3 stripping tool -1-  .
    2. 4.2  Close and then open the crimping pliers again.
    3. 4.3  Remove antenna cable -2-  .
  5. Strip antenna cable outer jacket using VAS 6720/1  or VAS 6720/3  stripping tool -1-  .

    1. 5.1  Push antenna cable -2-  into mounting -3-  until stop -4-  .
    2. 5.2  Close and then open the crimping pliers again.
    3. 5.3  Pull antenna cable -2-  out of VAS 6720/1  or VAS 6720/3  stripping tool -1-  .

      Information 

      • The locating pin must move smoothly. 
      • Absolute cleanliness of the rotary cutting segment must be ensured. Any remaining shielding strands must be removed carefully before use. 
  6. Position antenna cable -1-  in rotary cutting segment -2-  of VAS 6720/1 or VAS 6720/3 stripping tool -3-  .

    1. 6.1  Push locating pin -4-  in -Arrow direction-  into rotary cutter segment -2-  as far as it will go.
    2. 6.2  Push antenna cable -1-  into rotary cutting segment -2-  as far as it will go, making sure that locating pin -4-  is pushed completely out of the rotary cutting segment.
  7. Strip the shielding of the antenna cable with VAS 6720/1  or VAS 6720/3  stripping tool -1-  .

    Shield on antenna cable

    1. 7.1  Engage the knife holder of rotary cutter segment -2-  in -Arrow direction A-  , making sure that gap -3-  is completely closed.
    2. 7.2  Hold antenna cable -4-  securely.
    3. 7.3 -5-  Turn the rotary cutting segment -Arrow direction B-  in until it can turn easily.

      Information 

      • If the shielding strands have not been cut fully to the required length, this must be done manually. 
      • Make sure that all of the shielding strands are facing the cable connection point. 
      • Make sure that the insulation and shielding are completely removed from the rotary cutting segment. If necessary, a small screwdriver can be used to push it through the hole in the locating pin. 
  8. Remove antenna cable -1-  from the rotary cutting segment -2-  .

    1. 8.1  Pull out release bolt -3-  in -Arrow direction A-  until the blade holder detaches from antenna cable -1-  .
    2. 8.2  Push locating pin -4-  in -Arrow direction B-  into rotary cutting segment -2-  as far as it will go, thereby pushing antenna cable -1-  out of rotary cutting segment -2-  .
    3. 8.3  Remove antenna cable -1-  .
    4. 8.4  Remove the shielding from antenna cable -1-  .
  9. Strip the internal insulation of the antenna cable with VAS 6720/1  or VAS 6720/3  stripping tool -1-  .

    1. 9.1  Push antenna cable -2-  into mounting -3-  until stop -4-  .
    2. 9.2  Close and then open the crimping pliers again.
    3. 9.3  Pull antenna cable -2-  out of VAS 6720/1  or VAS 6720/3  stripping tool -1-  .
  10. Fit crimping tool -1-  on crimping pliers -2-  from the > VAS 6720 - repair kit for antenna lines  in the direction of the arrow.

    1. 10.1  Unlock pins -3-  .
    2. 10.2 For antenna line system RTK-031: 

      Fit VAS 6720/2  crimping tool RTK-031 on crimping pliers -2-  .

    3. 10.3 For antenna line system RG-174: 

      Fit VAS 6720/4  crimping tool RG-174 on crimping pliers -2-  .

    4. 10.4  Lock pins -3-  .
  11. Insert inner contact -1-  into VAS 6720/2  or VAS 6720/4  crimping tool -2-  and secure it.

    1. 11.1  Fold out pivot positioner -3-  .
    2. 11.2  Open positioning plate -4-  by pressing in -Arrow direction-  .
    3. 11.3  Push inner contact -1-  into pivot positioner -3-  as far as it will go.
    4. 11.4  Close positioning plate -4-  .
    5. 11.5  Fold in pivot positioner -3-  .
  12. Crimp the inner conductor of antenna cable -1-  with VAS 6720/2  or VAS 6720/4  crimping tool -2-  .

    1. 12.1  Push the inner conductor of antenna cable -1-  into inner contact -3-  .
    2. 12.2  Close the crimping pliers completely until the crimping pliers open again automatically.
    3. 12.3  Open positioning plate -4-  by pressing in -Arrow direction-  .
    4. 12.4  Remove antenna cable -5-  .
  13. Position outer contact -1-  on antenna cable -4-  .

    Outer contact on antenna cable

    1. 13.1  Slide sleeve -3-  over antenna cable -4-  .
    2. 13.2  Slide outer contact -1-  completely over inner conductor -2-  and slide knurled contact area -5-  over the aluminum foil and under shielding -6-  .
    3. 13.3  Position shielding -6-  on knurled contact area -5-  .
    4. 13.4  Slide sleeve -3-  over shielding -6-  .

      Information 

      Make sure that no shielding strands stick out after crimping. Any that do need to be removed.

  14. Crimp the inner conductor of antenna cable -1-  with VAS 6720/2  or VAS 6720/4  crimping tool -2-  .

    Outer contact on antenna cable

    1. 14.1  Fold out -3-  pivot positioner.
    2. 14.2  Insert outer contact of antenna cable -1-  in center profile -4-  of VAS 6720/2  or VAS 6720/4  crimping tool -2-  .
    3. 14.3  Close the crimping pliers completely until the crimping pliers open again automatically.
    4. 14.4  Remove antenna cable -5-from VAS 6720/2  or VAS 6720/4  crimping tool -2-  .
  15. To connect the antenna lines using antenna socket connectors, insulate the insulation and crimp each line with antenna pin connectors.
  16. Fit the connector housing for antenna socket connector -1-or the connector housing for antenna pin -2-  .

    1. 16.1  Open locking mechanism -3-  in -Arrow direction A-  .
    2. 16.2  Insert antenna cable -4-  into the relevant connector housing in -Arrow direction-  .
    3. 16.3  Lock locking mechanism -3-  in -Arrow direction B-  .
    4. 16.4  Check that antenna cable -4-  is fitted securely in the connector housing by pulling it gently.
  17. In case of damage to the antenna cable within the cable run: 

    Repair antenna cable section.

    1. 17.1  Install the socket connector and pin connector on the antenna cylinder you have just cut according to steps  1- 16.
    2. 17.2  Connect the adapter cable for the corresponding damaged antenna cable with the socket connector and pin connector according to steps  1- 16.
