Replacing Steering Column Centre

NOTIFICATION 

Voltage drop 

• Irreparable damage to control unit 
• Damage to control unit 
• Error entries in the control unit 
• Control unit programming/coding aborted 
• Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming/coding 

  → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.

  → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.

  → Connect battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to vehicle battery.

Information 

• All remote controls (keys) are required for teaching a DME, rear-end electronics (rear BCM), electronic steering lock (ELV) control unit for example, or for teaching remote controls (keys). 
• Remote controls (keys) that are not taught during this teaching procedure will no longer be recognised by the vehicle. 

Information 

• The PIWIS Tester instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases. 
• The procedure described here has been structured in general terms; different text or additions may appear in the PIWIS Tester. 

Use the PIWIS Tester  to perform the First Start function.

1. Control unit for steering column adjustment

   > 483055 - REPLACE CONTROL UNIT FOR STEERING COLUMN ADJUSTMENT 

2. Programming control unit for electric steering column lock

   > 480855 - REPLACE STEERING LOCK 

   Control unit for steering column lock 

3. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
4. Select the vehicle type if necessary.
5. Select the DME  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue.

   Is a "Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)" to be created? Press F11 to continue.

6. Select Coding/programming  .
7. Select Automatic coding  . Press F12 to continue.
8. The message "Coding was completed successfully" appears. Press F12 to continue.
9. Go back to the overview. Press F11 to continue.
10. In the overview  press F7 to switch to the Additional menu  .
11. Immobiliser commissioning  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
12. Enter the PPN user name and password  . Press F12 to continue.
13. The tester displays the message: Login successful  . Press F12 to continue.
14. Check the chassis number. Enter the order number. Press F12 to continue.
15. Follow instructions on Tester. Press F12 to continue.
16. The tester displays the message: Immobiliser commissioning successful  . Press F12 to continue.
17. Read out fault memory  and delete any fault entries.
18. Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
19. Lock, open and start the vehicle using all remote controls.
