Removing Front Air-Spring Strut

Information 

Recommendation for workshops replacing shock absorbers for workshops:

• Dampers can be replaced separately up to a mileage of 30, 000 km or 3 years. 
• If the mileage is > 30, 000 km or the components are more than 3 years old, we recommend replacing them in pairs. 

Information 

To prevent damage to the air springs, pay particular attention to the following points when handling air springs:

• The air spring must never be bled completely. This applies to both installed and removed air spring bellows. 
• An air spring is depressurised if the pressure in the air spring is less than 1.5 bar. 
• The vehicle must never be lowered with depressurised air springs. 
• Air-spring struts must be installed in the vehicle within one year.

   Support T10149 on wheel hub

   1. 1.1 > T10149 - Support  must be fitted on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  .
   2. 1.2 Turn the wheel hub until one bore is at the highest position and secure > T10149 - support  at the very top bore of the wheel hub using a wheel bolt -Arrow-  . > Support T10149 on wheel hub 
2. Only for removing the right air-spring strut: 

   Remove air inlet housing cover -1-  .

   1. 2.1 Unscrew nuts -2-  .
   2. 2.2 Remove air inlet housing cover -1-  .

   Information 

   The cutting ring -1-  and Voss threaded joint -2-  must remain on the air line -3-  .

3. Disconnect line connections for front air-spring strut.

   Line connections for air-spring strut

   1. 3.1 Unclip line clip -1-  .
   2. 3.2 Release and disconnect electric plug connection air-spring strut front -2-  .
   3. 3.3 Unscrew union nut on air line -3-  and pull off air line -4- quickly  (only a small amount of air should escape).
   4. 3.4 Close off line connections to prevent dirt from getting in using a suitable stopper.
4. Release retaining lugs -2-  on DME -1-  control unit and move control unit aside.

   Air-spring strut holder

   • Never carry the spring strut by the holder -1-  . If the holder is bent, there is a risk of collision while driving.

   The help of another person is required for this work.

5. Remove air-spring strut -1-  .

   Air-spring strut and mounting saddle

   1. 5.1 Unscrew screws securing mounting saddle to body -2-  .
   2. 5.2 Remove air-spring strut -1-  together with mounting saddle -3-  by pulling it downwards.
6. Remove mounting saddle for -1-  air-spring strut -2-  .

   1. 6.1 Unscrew nuts securing air-spring strut to mounting saddle -3-  .
   2. 6.2 Remove mounting saddle -1-  from air-spring strut -2-  .
