Remove Control Chain

NOTIFICATION
Timing not set correctly
- Risk of engine damage
- Rough running engine
- Loss of engine power
- → Do not use force when fitting the staking tool.
- → Make sure that the gap is equal on both sides.
- → When inserting the staking tools, do not use force to turn the camshafts against any resistance.
- → The engine must be exactly at top dead centre.
- → The opposite cylinder must be at ignition TDC.
- T40263 - Wrench, SW21-2-
and T40314 - adapter-1-
must be fitted on the crankshaft -3-
.
Tools on crankshaft
- Use T40263 - wrench, SW21
and T40314 - adapter
to turn the crankshaft clockwise until the marking on the vibration damper -1-
is at TDC -2-
.
TDC marking on vibration damper
- Check that the markings on the camshaft actuators (cylinder bank 1) -1 and 2-
are aligned with the reference points -Arrows-
on the camshaft housing. If necessary: Turn the crankshaft one turn further until it is back at TDC.

- The markings on the camshaft actuators (cylinder bank 2) -1 and 2-
must be aligned with the reference points -Lines-
on the camshaft housing.
Markings on camshaft actuator (cylinder bank 2)
- Remove stoppers on camshafts -1- .
- Insert T40331 - camshaft clamp-2 to 5-
.
- 6.1 Tightening adapter for camshaft clamp T40331/2 on camshaft housing 9 Nm
- 6.2 Insert camshaft clamp T40331/1 -3- on the right cylinder bank 2 with the inscription "B" facing away from the engine. Turn the crankshaft back and forth slightly to do this, if necessary.
- 6.3 Insert camshaft clamp T40331/1 -3- on the right cylinder bank 1 with the inscription "B" facing away from the engine. Turn the crankshaft back and forth slightly to do this, if necessary.
- 6.4 On the right cylinder bank 1, secure camsha f t clamps T40331/1, T40331/8 and T40331/5 -3 - to 5- using T40331/9 -2- .
- 6.5 On the right cylinder bank 2, secure camshaft clamps T40331/1, T40331/8 and T40331/5 -3 - to 5- using T40331/9 -2- .

Tighten screws on the camshaft clamps -Arrows-
. 9 Nm
Camshaft clamp
- Secure the crankshaft.
- 7.1 Unscrew screw plug -1- from bore -2- .
- 7.2
Screw T40069 - locking pin
into the bore -2-
by hand.
Turn the crankshaft back and forth slightly to do this, if necessary.
- 7.3
Tighten T40069 - fastening screw
. 20 Nm
Securing crankshaft
Information
The T90001 - counterhold tool can only be inserted at one position. To do this, the markings -1 and 2- on the camshaft actuator and chain housing must be aligned.

VAS 261 001 - ring spanner insert, a/f 41
with T90001 - counter-hold tool

- Release camshaft actuator -1-
.

Counter the camshaft actuator -1-
using
VAS 261 001 - ring spanner insert, a/f 41-2-
and T90001 - counterhold tool
and loosen using T90000 - socket E24-3-
.
Do not unscrew the camshaft actuator -1- from - the camshaft.

Mark camshaft actuators and camshafts for re-installation using a coloured marker.
Camshaft actuator
- 9.1
Counter the camshaft actuator -1-
using
VAS 261 001 - ring spanner insert, a/f 41-2-
and T90001 - counterhold tool
and loosen using T90000 - socket E24-3-
.
- Lock both chain tensioners -1-
.
Information
The chain tensioner piston is oil-damped and can only be pressed back slowly and with constant pressure.
- Unscrew control valves and remove camshafts actuators.
- Remove tensioning rail -1- .
- Remove timing chains together with tensioning rail.
