Disassembling Engine

Information 

For many components, it is only necessary to partially disassemble the engine. The extent of disassembly depends on the damage and scope of repairs to be carried out.

  1. Have suitable stoppers ready for closing off the connections.
  2. Remove turbocharger.

    > Removing and installing turbocharger (V8 biturbo) 

  3. Remove both exhaust manifolds.

    > Removing and installing exhaust manifold (V8 Turbo) 

  4. Remove oil filter housing.

    > Removing and installing oil filter housing (V8 biturbo) 

  5. Remove inner heat shields -1-  and front heat shield -2-  .

    Heat protection in inner V

    1. 5.1  Remove inner heat shields -1-  .
      1. 5.1.1  Unscrew screws on inner heat shields -3-  .
      2. 5.1.2  Release and disconnect electric plug connection -4-  .
      3. 5.1.3  Remove inner heat shields -1-  .
    2. 5.2  Remove front heat shield -2-  .
      1. 5.2.1  Unscrew screw on front heat shield -5-  .
      2. 5.2.2  Remove front heat shield -2-  .
  6. Remove piston spray nozzle control valve.

    > Removing and installing piston spray nozzle control valve (V8 biturbo) 

  7. Remove oil pressure switch.

    > Removing and installing oil pressure switch (V8 biturbo) 

  8. Remove oil temperature sensor.

    > Removing and installing oil temperature sensor 

  9. Remove oil/water heat exchanger.

    > Removing and installing oil/water heat exchanger (V8 biturbo) 

  10. Remove both drive belts.

    > Removing and installing drive belt (V8 biturbo) 

  11. Not for PHEV: 

    Remove belt tensioner for generator.

    > 137319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING BELT TENSIONER (GENERATOR)

  12. Not for PHEV: 

    Remove belt tensioner for air-conditioning compressor.

    > Removing and installing belt tensioner (air-conditioning compressor) 

  13. Remove crankshaft vibration damper.

    > Removing and installing crankshaft vibration damper (V8 biturbo) 

  14. Remove generator.

    > Removing and installing generator (V8 biturbo) 

  15. Remove generator bracket -1-  .

    Generator bracket

    1. 15.1  Unscrew screws on generator bracket -2-  .
    2. 15.2  Remove generator bracket -1-  .
  16. Remove air-conditioning compressor.

    V8 biturbo: 

    > Removing and installing air conditioning compressor 

    V8 Hybrid: 

    > Removing and installing air conditioning compressor 

  17. Remove air-conditioning compressor bracket -1-  .

    Air-conditioning compressor bracket

    1. 17.1  Unscrew screws on air-conditioning compressor bracket -2-  .
    2. 17.2  Remove air-conditioning compressor bracket -1-  .
  18. Remove coolant regulator housing.

    > Removing and installing coolant regulator housing (V8 biturbo) 

  19. Remove coolant pump.

    > Removing and installing coolant pump (V8 biturbo) 

  20. Remove drive plate.

    > Removing and installing drive plate 

  21. Remove upper chain housing cover.

    > 153319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING UPPER CHAIN HOUSING COVER (V8 BITURBO)

  22. Remove lower chain housing cover.

    > WM, 153319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING LOWER CHAIN HOUSING COVER (V8 BITURBO)

  23. Remove coolant lines -2 and 5-  .

    Coolant lines

    1. 23.1  Unscrew and remove screws -1-  .
    2. 23.2  Unscrew and remove screws -3 and 4-  .
    3. 23.3  Remove coolant lines -2 and 5-  .
  24. Remove oil separator.

    > Removing and installing oil separator (V8 biturbo) 

  25. Remove engine wire harness.

    > Refer to the appropriate service information.

  26. Remove tank vent valves with vent lines.

    > Removing and installing tank vent valve (V8 biturbo) 

  27. Remove vacuum line -2-  .

    Vacuum system

    1. 27.1  Mark vacuum connections so that they cannot get mixed up.
    2. 27.2  Disconnect vacuum line connection -2-  at the brake booster vacuum pump -1-  .
    3. 27.3  Disconnect vacuum line connection -2-  at connections -3 to 7-  .
  28. Remove intake-air distributor.

    > Removing and installing intake-air distributor (V8 biturbo) 

  29. Remove knock sensors.

    > Removing and installing knock sensor (V8 biturbo) 

  30. Remove ignition coils.

    > Removing and installing ignition coils (V8 biturbo) 

  31. Remove spark plugs.

    > Removing and installing spark plugs 

  32. Remove upper heat insulation -1-  .

    Heat insulation

  33. Remove both fuel lines (high-pressure pump to rail).

    > Removing and installing fuel line (V8 biturbo) 

  34. Remove high-pressure pumps.

    > Removing and installing high-pressure pump (V8 biturbo) 

  35. Remove tappets for high-pressure pumps -1-  using a magnet.

  36. Remove fuel injectors.

    > Removing and installing fuel injector 

  37. Remove solenoid hydraulic valves for valve lift adjustment.

    > Removing and installing solenoid hydraulic valve for valve lift adjustment 

  38. Remove oil pan.

    > Removing and installing oil pan (V8 biturbo) 

  39. Remove oil guide housing.

    > Removing and installing oil guide housing (V8 biturbo) 

  40. Remove oil pump.

    > Removing and installing oil pump (V8 biturbo) 

  41. Remove actuators for camshaft.

    > WM, 158419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CAMSHAFT ACTUATOR (INCLUDES SETTING TIMING)

  42. Replace guide and tensioning rails.

    > WM, 154719 REMOVING AND INSTALLING GUIDE AND TENSIONING RAILS

  43. Remove chain tensioner.

    > Removing and installing chain tensioner 

  44. Remove the cylinder head cover.

    > WM, 158219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CYLINDER HEAD COVER

  45. Remove camshafts.

    > WM, 150520 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CAMSHAFTS (V8 BITURBO)

  46. Remove cylinder heads.

    > WM, 157019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CYLINDER HEAD

  47. Remove crankcase cover.

    > WM, 101419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT CRANKCASE COVER (V8 BITURBO) 

  48. Remove piston and connecting rod.

    > Removing and installing pistons 

  49. Disassemble pistons.

    > Disassembling and assembling pistons 

  50. Remove crankshaft.
