Centring Camber On The Front Axle

Information 

The PDCC system can be active when the ignition is switched on (even when the vehicle is stationary). To avoid injury/crushing, only work near the anti-roll bar, lower trailing arm and bellows of the steering gear when the ignition is switched off and always allow for the run-on time of 60 seconds.

  1. Remove front underbody cover.

    > WM, 519219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COVER FOR FRONT UNDERBODY

  2. Remove front-axle support.

    > 400819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT-AXLE SUPPORT

    Information 

    • One-piece or two-piece heat protection is installed, depending on engine type. 
    • The one-piece heat protection is described here; the two-piece heat protection must also be completely removed. 
  3. Remove heat shield -1-  .

    On vehicles with PDCC, disconnect the cable plug  .

    Heat shield

    1. 3.1  Unscrew screws -2-  and remove heat shield -1-  .
  4. Unscrew screws -2 and 3-  on the front axle carrier (-1-  ) one after the other and replace them, only screwing-in the new screws by hand up to the anchor block, but do not tighten them yet.

    Front axle carrier

    Information 

    • Camber at the front axle cannot be adjusted. But camber can be centred evenly within the tolerance range by moving the front-axle carrier. 
    • All axle adjustment values must be checked whenever the camber is adjusted. 
    • The front-axle carrier only needs to be moved if the camber values are not correct.

    Centring front axle camber

    1. 5.1  Check camber value.

      > 4495TW ADJUSTMENT VALUES FOR SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT

    2. 5.2  Raise the vehicle front at the lifting platform jacking points using an axle lift.
    3. 5.3  Fit plastic-coated tyre iron between front axle carrier -1-  and body longitudinal member -2-  and move front axle carrier -1-Arrow-  in order to centre the camber.
  6. Tighten the screws you just replaced -2 and 3-  on the front axle carrier -1-  .

    Screws -2-  : > Initial tightening torque 115 Nm (84.8 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque + 90° 

    Screws -3-  : > Initial tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque + 180°

    Front axle carrier

  7. Check camber value again.

    > 4495TW ADJUSTMENT VALUES FOR SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT

  8. Install heat shield -1-  .

    Re-connect the cable plug on vehicles with PDCC  .

    Heat shield

    1. 8.1  Position heat shield -1-  and fit screws -2-  .
    2. 8.2  Tighten screws -2-  .

    Heat shield (one-piece):  On front axle carrier > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.6 ftlb.) 

    Heat shield (one-piece):  On longitudinal member > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.) (6.6 ftlb.) 

    Heat shield (two-piece):  On front axle carrier > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.6 ftlb.) 

    Heat shield (two-piece):  Upper part on longitudinal member > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.) (6.6 ftlb.) 

    Heat shield (two-piece):  Upper part on lower part > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.) (6.6 ftlb.) 

  9. Install front-axle support.

    > 400819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT-AXLE SUPPORT

  10. Install front underbody cover.

    > WM, 519219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COVER FOR FRONT UNDERBODY
