Draining Coolant

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING: Vehicle electrical system is live while draining the coolant 
  • Overheating of components 
  • Damage to the high-voltage system 
    • → Disconnect the battery for the 12 V vehicle electrical system before opening the cooling system.
    • → Disconnect external power connection.
    • → Observe specified sequence of work steps.
WARNING: Hot fluid 
  • Danger of scalding 
    • → Avoid contact with hot fluid.
    • → Wear personal protective gear.
CAUTION: Overpressure in the cooling system 
  • Failure of components 
  • Escaping coolant 
    • → Before getting started, reduce the pressure in the compressed air system to 0 bar.
    • → Keep the air pressure at max. 1 bar in order to blow out the cooling system.

Information 

Collect coolant in a collection container. Remove any coolant that runs out immediately.

Information 

  1. Remove front underbody cover.

  2. Place a suitable collection container under the vehicle.
  3. Only for PHEV: 

    Drain coolant at the heat exchanger for the high/low-temperature cooling system.

    1. 3.1  Loosen spring band clamp -2-  on the coolant hose -1-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamp pliers  and move it as far as required so that the coolant hose -1-  can be pulled off.
    2. 3.2  Pull coolant hose -1-  off the coolant pipe -3-  and catch escaping coolant.
    3. 3.3  Drain coolant from the heating circuit using pressure.
      1. 3.3.1  Secure coolant hose -1-  and close it off securely using > 3094 - hose clamp  .
      2. 3.3.2  Fit compressed air supply - without pressure - to adapter K22  and slowly increase the pressure to max. 1 bar  and maintain this until no more coolant emerges.
      3. 3.3.3  Reset the pressure level to 0 bar. 
      4. 3.3.4  Remove > 3094 - hose clamp  from coolant hose -1-  and close off coolant hose -4-  securely using > 3094 - hose clamp  .
      5. 3.3.5  Slowly increase the pressure at the coolant reservoir to max. 1 bar  and maintain this until no more coolant emerges.
      6. 3.3.6  Reset the pressure level to 0 bar. 
      7. 3.3.7  Remove > 3094 - hose clamp  .
    4. 3.4  Push coolant hose -1-  onto coolant pipe -3-  and tighten spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
  4. Drain coolant at the radiator.
    1. 4.1 V8BT PHEV only:  Disconnect coolant hose -1-  .
      1. 4.1.1  Loosen spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamp pliers  and move it as far as required so that the coolant hose -1-  can be pulled off.
      2. 4.1.2  Pull off coolant hose -1-  and catch escaping coolant.

    2. 4.2  Disconnect coolant hose -1-  .

      1. 4.2.1  Loosen safety clip -2-  .
      2. 4.2.2  Pull off coolant hose -1-  and catch escaping coolant.
    3. 4.3  Drain coolant at the radiator using pressure.
      1. 4.3.1  Secure coolant hose -1-  and close it off securely using > 3094 - hose clamp  .
      2. 4.3.2  Slowly increase the pressure to max. 1 bar  and maintain this until no more coolant emerges.
      3. 4.3.3  Reset the pressure level to 0 bar. 
      4. 4.3.4  Remove > 3094 - hose clamp  .
    4. 4.4 V8BT PHEV only:  Push on coolant hose -1-  and tighten spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamp pliers  .
    5. 4.5  Push on and lock the coolant hose -1-  , making sure that the safety clip -2-  locks securely.
  5. Drain coolant in the transmission cooling circuit.

    Coolant drain point on thermostat

    1. 5.1  Unclip coolant hose -1-  from the line clip -4-  .
    2. 5.2  Loosen spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamp pliers  and move it as far as required so that the coolant hose -1-  can be pulled off.
    3. 5.3  Pull coolant hose -1-  off the thermostat -3-  and catch escaping coolant.
    4. 5.4  Drain coolant from the transmission cooling circuit using pressure.
      1. 5.4.1  Secure coolant hose -1-  and close it off securely using > 3094 - hose clamp  .
      2. 5.4.2  Slowly increase the pressure to max. 1 bar  and maintain this until no more coolant emerges.
      3. 5.4.3  Reset the pressure level to 0 bar. 
      4. 5.4.4  Remove > 3094 - hose clamp  from coolant hose -1-  and close off the opening of the thermostat -3-  securely.
      5. 5.4.5  Slowly increase the pressure to max. 1 bar  and maintain this until no more coolant emerges.
      6. 5.4.6  Reset the pressure level to 0 bar. 
      7. 5.4.7  Remove stoppers.
    5. 5.5  Push coolant hose -1-  onto the thermostat -3-  and tighten spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    6. 5.6  Secure coolant hose -1-  with line clip -4-  .
