Removing Upper Chain Housing Cover

WARNING: Highly inflammable or explosive materials 
  • Danger of fire or explosion 
    • Avoid contact with hot parts or sources of ignition.
    • Use suction to remove ignitable vapors.
    • Attach warning sign in a clearly visible position.
    • Contain leaked media using non-flammable absorbent material and put it in a container designed for this purpose for disposal in accordance with local requirements.
    • Secure collection containers/vessels to prevent them from tipping over.

  • Danger of poisoning or suffocation 
  • Danger of burns to the eyes and skin 
    • Ventilate the work area well.
    • Never ingest or inhale.
    • Read specific information on the Hazard Sheet.
    • Wear personal protective gear.
    • Do not smoke, eat or drink in the work area.

Information 

The following steps are shown only on one side of the vehicle. They also apply for the other side.

  1. Have suitable stoppers ready for closing off the line connections.
  2. Only for removing upper chain housing cover on left cylinder bank: 

    Remove coolant pipe for left cylinder bank -3-  .

    Coolant pipe on left cylinder bank

    1. 2.1  Unscrew screws for coolant pipe -1 and 2-  .
    2. 2.2  Remove coolant pipe -3-  and close off line connections using stoppers.
  3. Only for removing upper chain housing cover on right cylinder bank: 

    Remove coolant pipe -3-  for right cylinder bank.

    1. 3.1  Unscrew screw on coolant pipe holder -1-  .
    2. 3.2  Unscrew screw for coolant pipe flange -4-  on the cylinder head.
    3. 3.3  Remove coolant pipe -3-  with holder -2-  .
    4. 3.4  Close off line connections with stoppers.
  4. Remove fuel high-pressure line -1-  .

    Fuel high-pressure line

    1. 4.1  Unscrew screws on holder -2-  for fuel high-pressure line and remove holder.
    2. 4.2  Unscrew union nuts on line connections -3-  .
      1. 4.2.1  Collect escaping fuel.
      2. 4.2.2  Close off connections with stoppers.
    3. 4.3  Guide out fuel high-pressure line -1-  .
  5. Loosen upper chain housing cover.

    Upper chain housing cover

    1. 5.1  Release and disconnect electric plug connections for actuators for camshaft controllers -9-  .
    2. 5.2  Unclip retaining clips -10 and 11-  and move electric lines aside.
    3. 5.3  Unscrew screws on upper chain housing cover -1 to 8-  .
  6. Loosen upper chain housing cover -1-  from the bonding.

    Removing upper chain housing cover

    1. 6.1  Secure upper chain housing cover -1-  to prevent it from falling down.
    2. 6.2  Carefully heat sealing faces on upper chain housing cover -1-  using a hot-air gun. Make sure not to damage any add-on parts with hot air!
    3. 6.3  Carefully insert a suitable tool at the press-off tabs -Arrows-  on the upper chain housing cover -1-  .
    4. 6.4  Carefully lever upper chain housing cover -1-  off the cylinder head.
