Draining Coolant

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING: Vehicle electrical system is live while draining the coolant 
  • Overheating of components 
  • Damage to the high-voltage system 
    1. → Disconnect the battery for the 12 V vehicle electrical system before opening the cooling system.
    2. → Disconnect external power connection.
    3. → Observe specified sequence of work steps.
WARNING: Hot fluid 
  • Danger of scalding 
    1. → Avoid contact with hot fluid.
    2. → Wear personal protective gear.

Information 

Collect coolant in a collection container. Remove any coolant that runs out immediately.

Information 

  1. Remove seal -3-  and open the cap -2-  on the coolant reservoir (low-temperature cooling system) -1-  .

  2. Place a suitable collection container under the vehicle.
  3. Drain the rear section of the low-temperature cooling system.

    Coolant line connection point - rear section

    1. 3.1 Disconnect coolant hose at the underbody -1-  .
      1. 3.1.1 Loosen spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamp pliers  , disconnect coolant hose -1-  from coolant pipe -3-  and catch escaping coolant.
      2. 3.1.2 Connect a suitable drain hose to the coolant pipe -3-  and secure it.
    2. 3.2 Screw adapter K  22 from > 9696 - filling device  onto the coolant reservoir.
    3. 3.3 Connect compressed air hose - still without pressure - to the adapter K 22  and slowly increase the pressure to max. 1 bar  .
    4. 3.4 Apply pressure to the cooling system for as long as required until no more coolant emerges.
    5. 3.5 Close off coolant hose -1-  securely using a suitable stopper.
    6. 3.6 When there is no more coolant coming from the drip hose: Remove stopper from coolant hose -1-  and close off the drip hose securely using a suitable stopper.
    7. 3.7 As soon as there is no more coolant coming from the coolant hose: Relieve the pressure and connect coolant hose -1-  to coolant pipe -3-  .
    8. 3.8 Fasten spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamp pliers  .
  4. Drain the front section of the low-temperature cooling system.

    Coolant line connection point - front section

    1. 4.1 Disconnect coolant hose -1-  from power electronics unit.
      1. 4.1.1 Loosen spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamp pliers  , disconnect coolant hose -1-  from coolant pipe -3-  and catch escaping coolant.
      2. 4.1.2 Connect a suitable drain hose to the coolant pipe -3-  and secure it.
    2. 4.2 Slowly increase pressure to max. 1 bar  .
    3. 4.3 Apply pressure to the cooling system for as long as required until no more coolant emerges.
    4. 4.4 Close off coolant hose -1-  securely using a suitable stopper.
    5. 4.5 When there is no more coolant coming from the drip hose: Remove stopper from coolant hose -1-  and close off the drip hose securely using a suitable stopper.
    6. 4.6 As soon as there is no more coolant coming from the coolant hose -1-  : Relieve the pressure and connect coolant hose -1-  to coolant pipe -3-  .
    7. 4.7 Fasten spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamp pliers  .

      Information 

      The entire amount of refrigerant drained should be approx. 7.4 litres.

  5. Check the amount of coolant drained.
