Remove engine

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING: Hot fluid 
  • Danger of scalding 
    1. → Let the fluid cool down.
    2. → Wear personal protective gear.
WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    1. → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

NOTIFICATION 

Opened refrigerant system for repairs. 

Information 

When lowering the engine, make sure not to damage the brake line holder and plug connections on the brake calliper.

  1. Have suitable stoppers ready for closing off the line connections.
  2. Have suitable aids ready for soaking up emerging fluids.
  3. Remove oil pipe -1-  .

    1. 3.1 Turn oil pipe -1-  anti-clockwise to open it. -Arrow- 
    2. 3.2 Remove oil pipe -1-  .
  4. Disconnect electric wire harness for engine -1-  .

    1. 4.1 Release and disconnect plug connections -2-  .
    2. 4.2 Unclip clips -3-  .
    3. 4.3 Set electric wire harness for engine -1-  aside.
  5. Disconnect pressure hose -1-  .

    1. 5.1 Loosen screw-type clamp on pressure hose -2-  .
    2. 5.2 Disconnect pressure hose -1-  together with screw-type clamp -2-  from the throttle housing.
  6. Release and disconnect electric plug connections for engine mounts -1-  and wire harness for steering gear -2-  .

  7. Disconnect wire harness for level sensors -1-  .

    1. 7.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connections for level sensors -2-  .
    2. 7.2 Unclip clips -3-  .
    3. 7.3 Move wire harness for level sensors aside.

    1. 8.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connections -1-  .
    2. 8.2 Unclip retaining clips -3-  .
    3. 8.3 Cut tie-wrap -4-  .
  9. Disconnect electric plug connection -1-  .

    1. 9.1 Disconnect ground points.
      1. 9.1.1 Unscrew nuts -4-  .
      2. 9.1.2 Move ground lines -5-  aside.
    2. 9.2 Release and disconnect electric plug connection -1-  .
    3. 9.3 Unscrew screw on holder -2-  .
    4. 9.4 Disengage electric plug connection -1-  from holder -3-  and remove holder.
  10. Loosen cable duct in engine compartment -1-  .

    1. 10.1 Unscrew nut for external power connection -2-  .
    2. 10.2 Unscrew screw on ground line -3-  .
    3. 10.3 Unscrew screw on cable duct at the top -4-  .
    4. 10.4 Unscrew nut on cable duct at the bottom -5-  .
    5. 10.5 Disengage cable duct -1-  in a downward direction and set it aside.
  11. Disconnect coolant vent line -1-  .

    1. 11.1 Unclip coolant vent line -1-  from clip -2-  .
    2. 11.2 Release and disconnect coolant vent line -1-  at connection point -3-  in the engine compartment.
    3. 11.3 Close off line connections with stoppers.

    Information 

    The procedure for removing and installing is described for one side as an example. The procedure for the other side is practically identical.

  12. Loosen bracket for electric lines for brakes -3-  .

    1. 12.1 Disconnect electric lines for the brake -1-  .
      1. 12.1.1 Disengage electric lines -1-  and plug connection -2-  from holder -3-  .
      2. 12.1.2 Release and disconnect electric plug connections for wheel speed sensor -4-  and brake pad wear indicator -2-  .
    2. 12.2 Unscrew screw on holder for electric lines -5-  .
    3. 12.3 Remove retaining clip -6-  .
    4. 12.4 Remove holder for electric lines -3-  .
  13. Remove heat protection -1-  .

    1. 13.1 Unscrew screws -2-  and remove heat protection -1-  .
  14. Remove side brackets -1-  and sliding elements -2-  .

    1. 14.1 Unscrew screw on sliding elements -3-  .
    2. 14.2 Unscrew screws on bracket -4-  .
    3. 14.3 Remove bracket -1-  and sliding elements -2-  .
  15. Disconnect coolant hose for radiator -1-  .

    1. 15.1 Release and disconnect coolant hose connection -2-  .
    2. 15.2 Release and disconnect electric plug connection -3-  .
    3. 15.3 Set coolant hose -1-  aside.
    4. 15.4 Close off connections with stoppers.
  16. Disconnect pressure hose -1-  on pressure pipes -2-  at the left and right.

    1. 16.1 Loosen screw-type clamp -3-  .
    2. 16.2 Pull off pressure hose -1-  .
  17. Disconnect coolant hose -1-  .

    1. 17.1 Loosen spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    2. 17.2 Pull off coolant hose -1-  .
    3. 17.3 Close off line connections with stoppers.
  18. Loosen ATF cooler -1-  .

    1. 18.1 Release and disconnect line connection for coolant hose -2-  .
    2. 18.2 Only if automatic transmission is removed:  Unscrew screws on ATF cooler -3-  .
    3. 18.3 Only if automatic transmission is removed:  Hang ATF cooler -1-  at the side.
    4. 18.4 Close off line connections with stoppers.
  19. Disconnect universal joint for steering -1-  from the steering gear -2-  .

    1. 19.1 Unscrew screw on universal joint for steering -3-  .
    2. 19.2 Disconnect universal joint for steering -1-  from the steering gear -2-  .

    Information 

    To make it easier to turn the engine, the drive belts can be removed from the generator and air-conditioning compressor.

    > Removing and installing drive belt (V8 biturbo) 

    Information 

    For loosening/tightening the screws on the drive plate, always counter at the central screw on the vibration damper. The help of another person is required.

  20. Only if automatic transmission is removed following removal: 

    Unscrew drive plate screws -1-  .

    1. 20.1 Remove cap -2-  .
    2. 20.2 Unscrew drive plate screw -1-  .
    3. 20.3 Turn the engine further and repeat the procedure on all drive plate screws.
  21. Disconnect electric line. > Electric plug connection  .

    1. 21.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connection -1-  .
    2. 21.2 Unclip clip -2-  and move line aside.
  22. Disconnect electric wire harness for transfer gear -3-  .

    1. 22.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connection for transfer gear -1-  .
    2. 22.2 Unclip clips -2-  .
    3. 22.3 Move electric wire harness for transfer gear -3-  aside.
  23. Disconnect electric wire harness for automatic transmission at the front.

    1. 23.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connections -1 to 3-  .
    2. 23.2 Unclip clips -4 and 5-  .
  24. Disconnect electric wire harness for automatic transmission at the rear.

    1. 24.1 Push sleeve aside and release and disconnect electric plug connection -1-  .
    2. 24.2 Unclip clips -2-  .
    3. 24.3 Release and disconnect electric plug connections -3-  .
    4. 24.4 Unclip clips -4 and 5-  .
    5. 24.5 Move electric wire harness aside and secure it so that it cannot be damaged when removing the engine.
  25. Remove cover on high-voltage power electronics -1-  .

    1. 25.1 Unscrew and remove screws -2-  .
    2. 25.2 Unscrew nuts -3-  .
    3. 25.3 Remove cover on high-voltage power electronics unit -1-  .
  26. Release and disconnect high-voltage plug connection on power electronics unit and air-conditioning compressor. > High-voltage electric plug connection

    1. 26.1 Press red release tab -a-  .
    2. 26.2 Pull orange tab in direction of arrow until you feel a certain amount of resistance -arrow A-  .
    3. 26.3 Release black tab -a-  and disconnect connector -arrow B-  .
  27. Unclip clips on high-voltage line for air-conditioning compressor -1-  and move high-voltage line -2-  aside.

  28. Disconnect high-voltage line connections -1-  at the power electronics unit.

    1. 28.1 Unscrew and remove screws -2-  .
    2. 28.2 Disconnect high-voltage line connections -1-  from power electronics.
    3. 28.3 Protect connections from dirt and moisture.
    4. 28.4 Unscrew nuts on line guide -3-  .
  29. Loosen high-voltage line guide -1-  .

    1. 29.1 Unclip clip -2-  .
    2. 29.2 Screw off nut -3-  .
  30. Disconnect coolant hose -1-  .

    2. 30.2 Set coolant hose -1-  aside.
    3. 30.3 Close off line connections with stoppers.
  31. Release and disconnect line connection for coolant hose at the radiator -1-  .

  32. Loosen both connecting links -1-  at the front.

    1. 32.1 Unscrew screw on connecting link -2-  and counter at the nut at the same time.

  33. Disconnect threaded joints on chassis.

    1. 33.1 Unscrew screw on upper trailing arm -1-  and counter at the nut at the same time.
    2. 33.2 Pull upper trailing arm -2-  out of the wheel bearing housing.
    3. 33.3 Unscrew nut on tie-rod ball -3-  .
    4. 33.4 Remove tie-rod ball -4-  using > T40010A - ball joint puller  .
    5. 33.5 Unscrew screw -5-  on lower trailing arm.
  34. Fit > VAS 6832/8 - universal assembly device  on > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  and position it under the engine.
  35. Unscrew screws on front-axle carrier -1 to 4-  .

    Bolts on front-axle carrier

    1. 35.1 Unscrew screw on front-axle carrier -1-  .
    2. 35.2 De-burr the bore.
    3. 35.3 > T40327 - Locating pin  must be screwed into the bore hole and tightened.

      Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ftlb.) 

    4. 35.4 Repeat the procedure in the sequence -2 to 4-  for all other screws on the front-axle carrier.
  36. Unscrew rear screws on front-axle carrier -1-  and screws on transmission support -2-  .

  37. Guide engine on > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  down out of the vehicle.
