Draining Fuel Using Piwis Tester 3

WARNING: Highly inflammable or explosive materials 
  • Danger of fire or explosion 
    • → Avoid contact with hot parts or sources of ignition.
    • → Use suction to remove ignitable vapors.
    • → Attach warning sign in a clearly visible position.
    • → Contain leaked media using non-flammable absorbent material and put it in a container designed for this purpose for disposal in accordance with local requirements.
    • → Secure collection containers/vessels to prevent them from tipping over.
WARNING: Caustic fluids 
  • Danger of chemical burns 
    • → Wear personal protective gear.
    • → Ensure that there is good ventilation.
    • → Avoid contact with caustic fluid.
    • → If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.

Information 

The fuel tank can be drained completely by selecting the method using >9900 - PIWIS Tester 3  .

Information 

Watch out for emerging fuel when disconnecting fuel lines. Place a clean cloth on the connection point, then loosen the connection.

  1. Connect a battery charger.
  2. Attach or mount a warning sign in a clearly visible position on the vehicle.

  3. Remove cover -1-  of fuse carrier in the front left footwell.

    1. 3.1  Unclip cover -2-  using a suitable tool.
    2. 3.2  Unscrew screw -3-  .
    3. 3.3  Unclip and remove cover -1-  from fuse carrier.
  4. Relieve fuel pressure in the system.
    1. 4.1  Remove fuse -1-  for the fuel pump row A, fuse 16  .
    2. 4.2  Start the engine, wait until it stops and then re-insert fuse -1-  .

  5. Remove cover for centre underbody at the right.

  6. Disconnect supply line at the connection point on the underbody.

    > WM, 203819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SUPPLY LINE (V6 TURBO) 

  7. Fit connecting line consisting of connecting line no. 18 from VAG 1318  and the long line from the two >P378c - connecting lines  on the supply line.

    Check that the plug-in coupling is fitted securely (it must lock with an audible click). 

  8. Guide the end of the connecting line into a suitable fuel container in order to collect emerging fuel.

    Secure the container to prevent it from falling over.

    You may have to have several fuel containers ready, depending on the amount of fuel.

  9. > 9900 - PIWIS Tester 3  must be connected to the vehicle.
  10. Select DME  in the control unit search screen.
  11. Switch to the Drive links/checks  menu item.
  12. Select the Drain fuel tank  function.
  13. Activate the Drain fuel tank (= activate fuel pump)  function by pressing F8 - Start and drain the fuel tank. Catch emerging fuel in the fuel container you have ready.
  14. To eliminate fuel vapors, position a suction hose close to where you are working and switch on the suction device.
  15. Switch off ignition, switch off >9900 - PIWIS Tester 3  and disconnect adapter line in the vehicle.
  16. When you have finished draining fuel, remove connecting line no. 18 from VAG 1318  from the supply line.
