Installing Cylinder Head

- → Clean or replace dirty components.

Install dowel sleeves -3- .

Cylinder head
1. 1.1 Check dowel sleeves -3- for damage and replace them if necessary.
2. 1.2 Insert dowel sleeves -3- into cylinder block.
Install cylinder head -1- .

Cylinder head
1. 2.1 Fit new cylinder-head gasket -2- and make sure that the cylinder-head gasket -2- and dowel sleeves -3- are fitted correctly.
2. 2.2 Carefully fit cylinder head -1- on the cylinder block from above. Make sure not to damage the cylinder-head gasket -2- while doing this.
3. 2.3 Screw in new cylinder head screws.
Tighten cylinder head screws in the sequence -1 to 11- .

Tightening sequence for cylinder head - V8 biturbo
1. 3.1 Step 1: Tighten screws -1 to 10- .
  > Tightening torque 15 Nm (11 ftlb.)
2. 3.2 Step 2: Tighten screws -1 to 10- .
  > Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 ftlb.)
3. 3.3 Step 3: Tighten screws -1 to 10- .
  > Torque angle + 300°
4. 3.4 Step 4: Loosen screws -1 to 10- .
  > Torque angle - 720°
5. 3.5 Step 5: Tighten screws -1 to 10- .
  > Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 ftlb.)
6. 3.6 Step 6: Tighten screws -1 to 10- .
  > Torque angle 120°
7. 3.7 Step 7: Tighten screw -11- .
  > Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
8. 3.8 Step 8: Tighten screw -11- .
  > Torque angle 25°
Only for removing cylinder head on cylinder bank 1: Install collar for guide rail -1- and chain tensioner -3- .

Chain tensioner on cylinder bank 1
1. 4.1 Screw in and tighten collar -1- .
  > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)
2. 4.2 Position chain tensioner -3- with a new O-ring. Screw in and tighten screws -2- .
  > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)
Only for removing cylinder head on cylinder bank 2: Install chain tensioner -3- and secure guide rail.

Chain tensioner on cylinder bank 2
1. 5.1 Screw in and tighten screw -1- .
  > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)
2. 5.2 Position chain tensioner -3- with a new O-ring and screw in and tighten screws -2- .
  > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)
Secure vent line -1- to the relevant cylinder head.

Vent line
1. 6.1 Connect vent line -1- .
2. 6.2 Tighten screw -2- .
  > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)
Install coolant lines -2 and 5- .

Coolant lines
1. 7.1 Connect coolant line -2- .
2. 7.2 Tighten screws -1-
  > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)
3. 7.3 Connect coolant line -5- .
4. 7.4 Tighten screw -3- and nut -4- .
  > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)
