Removing And Installing Valve Springs

  1. Turn the crankshaft clockwise using > T40263 - wrench a/f 21-1-  and > T40314 - adapter-2-  on the belt pulley until the piston of the relevant cylinder is at the bottom dead center (BDC) position.

    Turning the engine

  2. > VAS 5161A/38 - Guide plate-1-  must now be secured on the cylinder head.
    1. 2.1  > VAS 5161A/38 - Guide plate-1-  on the cylinder head must be aligned above the relevant combustion chamber.

      Observe markings A-Outlet side/E - Intake side  while doing this.

    2. 2.2  Tighten screws -Arrows-  with > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)  .
    3. 2.3  Fit punch VAS 5161/3A -2-  from tool set > VAS 5161A - Removal and installation device for valve keys  on the valve spring seat and loosen any tight valve keys by tapping them with a plastic hammer.

    Guide plate on cylinder head

    NOTIFICATION 

    Engine damage 

    • Risk of damage to valves due to incorrect handling 
      • → To prevent the valve from falling into the cylinder, the guide plate and sealing pins must not be unscrewed.
      • → Overpressure in the cylinder must be kept at least 6 bar.
      • → Cover passages and openings from the cylinder head into the crankcase.
  3. Build up overpressure in the relevant combustion chamber.
    1. 3.1  Screw sealing pin VAS 5161/10 -2-  from tool kit > VAS 5161A - Removal and installation device for valve keys  into the > VAS 5161A/38 - guide plate  .
    2. 3.2  Screw the hose adapter > T40012 - adapter-1-  hand-tight into the respective spark plug thread.
    3. 3.3  Connect compressed air to the hose adapter > T40012 - adapter-1-  .
      1. 3.3.1 Minimum pressure: 6 bar

  4. Remove valve springs using > VAS 5161A - removal and installation device for valve keys  .
    1. 4.1  Screw retainer VAS 5161/6 -2-  with guide fork and M8 threaded bolt VAS 5161/5 -3-  into the guide plate.
    2. 4.2  Insert assembly cartridge VAS 5161/8A -4-  into the bore over the valve spring to be removed.
    3. 4.3  Engage pressure fork VAS 5161/2 -1-  in the retainer VAS 5161/6 -2-  and press assembly cartridge down.
    4. 4.4  At the same time, turn the knurled screw -Arrow-  on the assembly cartridge clockwise until the tips engage in the valve collets.
    5. 4.5  Turn the knurled screw -Arrow-  back and forth to press the valve collets apart and capture them in the assembly cartridge. The knurled screw slips as far as it will go into the assembly cartridge.
    6. 4.6  Relieve pressure on pressure fork VAS 5161/2 -1-  and remove assembly cartridge VAS 5161/8A -4-  .
      1. 4.6.1  Remove valve keys from the assembly cartridge.

        Removing valve keys

  5. Remove valve spring with valve-spring plate and mark installation position.
  6. Insert valve springs and valve-spring plates in their original position. Observe installation positions.
  7. Install valve keys.
    1. 7.1  Insert assembly cartridge VAS 5161/8A -4-  into the > VAS 5161A/38 - guide plate  .
    2. 7.2  Press down the pressure fork VAS 5161/2 -1-  , pull the knurled screw -Arrow-  on the assembly cartridge VAS 5161/8A -4-  upwards by turning it to the left and to the right, this will insert the valve cone pieces.
    3. 7.3  Relieve pressure on pressure fork VAS 5161/2 -1-  whilst pulling on the knurled screw.
    4. 7.4  Repeat the procedure on each valve.

      Installation of the valve keys

  8. When all valves are secured again, disconnect the compressed air connection and unscrew > T40012 - adapter  .
  9. Do the same on the other cylinders. When all valve-stem seals have been replaced, remove the special tools from the cylinder head.
