Removing Valves

CAUTION:
Pointed or sharp objects
- Risk of cracks, pricks or cuts
- → Wear personal protective gear.
- Secure valves on the valve discs with adhesive tape to prevent them from slipping out.
- Prepare guide plate
Guide plate on cylinder head
- 2.1 Screw in M8 hexagon socket head bolts with a large bolt head diameter -Arrow- from > VAS 5161A - removal and installation device for valve cotters on the underside of the > VAS 5161A/43 - guide plate-1- .
- > VAS 6419 - Cylinder head tensioning device
must be inserted into the > VAS 6095A - engine and gearbox bracket
. Then position the cylinder head on the > VAS 6419 - cylinder head tensioning device
and tighten it. > Cylinder head tensioning device
Cylinder head tensioning device
- Fit air cushions on the relevant valve discs.
Cylinder head tensioning device
- 4.1 > VAS 6419 - Cylinder head tensioning device must now be connected to compressed air.
- 4.2 Using the lever -Arrow- , push the air cushion under the combustion chamber on which you want to remove the valves.
- 4.3 Let compressed air flow into the air cushion until it is touching the valve discs.

must now be secured to the cylinder head.
Screws on guide plate
- 5.1 > VAS 5161A/43 - Guide plate-1- on the cylinder head must be aligned above the relevant combustion chamber. Observe markings A - Outlet side/E - Intake side while doing this.
- 5.2 Tighten screws -Arrows- to > Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.) .
- 5.3 Fit punch -2- VAS 5161/3A on the valve-spring plate and loosen any tight valve keys by tapping them with a plastic hammer.
- Remove valve springs with valve-spring plates.
Removing valve keys
- 6.1 Secure retainer VAS 5161/6 using guide fork -1- and M8 threaded bolt VAS 5161/5 to the > VAS 5161A/43 - guide plate . > Removing valve keys
- 6.2 Insert assembly cartridge -2- VAS 5161/8A into the guide plate.
- 6.3 Engage pressure fork -3- VAS 5161/2 on the retainer -1- VAS 5161/6.
- 6.4 Press assembly cartridge -2- VAS 5161/8A down and turn the knurled screw -Arrow- on the assembly cartridge -2- VAS 5161/8A to the right at the same time until the tips engage in the valve keys.
- 6.5 Turn the knurled screw -Arrow- back and forth to press the valve keys apart and engage them in the assembly cartridge -2- VAS 5161/8A. The knurled screw -Arrow- slips as far as it will go into the assembly cartridge -2- .
- 6.6 Relieve pressure fork -3- VAS 5161/2 and remove assembly cartridge -2- VAS 5161/8A.
- 6.7 Remove valve keys from the assembly cartridge -2- .
- Mark the installation position of the valve springs for re-installation.
- Remove valve springs with valve-spring plates and sort according to installation position for re-installation.
- Continue in the same way for the remaining valves.
- Remove valves.
- 10.1 Remove special tool from the cylinder head.
- 10.2 Release cylinder head from the cylinder head tensioning device and remove it.
- 10.3 Remove adhesive tape from the valve discs and take valves out of the cylinder head. Sort valves according to installation position for re-installation.
