Classification Of Pistons And Connecting Rods

Allocation of connecting-rod bearing shells:
The connecting-rod bearing classification sequence begins at connecting-rod bearings 1 +4
The combination of bearing shells red/blue and blue/red have the same tolerance class as yellow/yellow.

- Insert piston -1-
into the cylinder bore.
Fitting piston
- 1.1 Remove connecting-rod bearing cap again.
- 1.2 Oil the cylinder wall.
- 1.3 V6 Turbo only:
Fit > T40369 - funnel-2- on cylinder block.
V8 biturbo only:
Fit > T90004 - funnel on cylinder block.

Push piston -1-
into the cylinder bore from above by hand according to the marking using > T40369 - funnel
or > T90004 - funnel (-2-) -Arrow-
.
The arrow on the piston crown must be facing the pulley side of the engine. The marking L or R next to the arrow indicates assignment to the left or right cylinder bank.
- Fit connecting rod and piston -3-
on the crankshaft.
Piston and connecting rod on crankshaft
- 2.1 Replace connecting-rod bearing shells and connecting-rod bearing cap screws -1- .
- 2.2 Oil the running surfaces of the connecting-rod bearing shells.
- 2.3 Fit connecting rod on the crankshaft.
- 2.4 Fit connecting-rod bearing cap -2- with new connecting-rod bearing shells on the connecting rod. Check that the retaining lugs are fitted correctly.
- 2.5 Oil new
connecting-rod bearing cap screws -1-
and fit and tighten them.
> Initial tightening 50 Nm (37 ftlb.)
> Final tightening + 90°
- Check the clearance of the oil spray jets.
