Replacing Instrument Cluster

NOTE: NOTIFICATION 
Voltage drop 
  • Irreparable damage to control unit 
  • Damage to control unit 
  • Fault entries in the control unit 
  • Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
  • Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming 

    → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.

    → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.

    → Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The terms "Ignition on" and "Starting engine" are re-defined for fully electric vehicles (battery electric vehicles - BEV).

Establishing operational readiness/Ignition on: 

Prerequisites for establishing operational readiness: High-voltage battery is sufficiently charged, remove vehicle charging cable from the vehicle charge port, pit driver's key in the emergency start tray.

Establishing operational readiness automatically: Get into the vehicle and close the driver's door. The driver's key is recognized inside the vehicle. Operational readiness is established.

Establishing operational readiness manually: Press Start/Stop switch. The driver's key is recognized inside the vehicle. Operational readiness is established.

Establishing operational readiness/Starting engine: 

Establish operational readiness and engage transmission range. The vehicle is now ready to drive and can be moved.

Ending operational readiness/Switching off ignition 

Ending operational readiness automatically: Get out of the vehicle with the driver's key and close the driver door. The driver's key is no longer detected outside the vehicle. Operational readiness ends.

Ending operational readiness manually: Press Start/Stop switch until the instrument cluster is switched off.

Ending driving readiness/Stopping engine 

Vehicle is stationary: Press the P  button on the instrument cluster. The vehicle is parked.

Information 

Ensure the consistency of a combination of hardware and software versions 

After performing software updates, always make sure that the target software versions are also actually installed on the control units and that the system is therefore ensured.

This also applies in the case of hardware replacement.

Information 

The instructions in the Tester  take precedence, since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear in the Tester  .

  1. Document the total mileage.
  2. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Establish operational readiness on the vehicle.
  3. Place original remote control (hand-held transmitter) in emergency start tray.

  4. Select the vehicle type if necessary.
  5. Select the Instrument cluster  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
  6. Select Maintenance/repairs  .
  7. Select Control unit replacement  . Press F12 to continue.
    1. 7.1  Select Read data  . Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
    2. 7.2  The Tester displays the message: Data was read out. Press F12 to continue.
  8. End operational readiness on the vehicle.
  9. Remove old instrument cluster and install new instrument cluster

  10. Establish operational readiness on the vehicle. Select Write data  in the menu (procedure described above). Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start. The data that was read out is loaded.
    1. 10.1  The Tester displays the message: Data has been written. Press F12 to continue.
  11. In the overview  , press F7 to switch to the Additional menu  .

    The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.

  12. Select Commission component protection  . Follow instructions and procedure.
    1. 12.1  Follow instructions and procedure.
    2. 12.2  Teach component protection according to menu guidance.
    3. 12.3  The Tester displays the message: Component protection taught.
  13. Select Maintenance of vehicle data  . Press F12 to continue.
    1. 13.1  Check vehicle data and make changes if necessary.

      The required vehicle data can be read out of the PIWIS vehicle information system.

  14. Switch back to the Overview  menu.
  15. Select the Instrument cluster  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue.
  16. Select Coding/programming  .
  17. Select Automatic programming  . Press F12 to continue.
    1. 17.1  The Tester displays the message: Programming was completed successfully.
  18. Select Maintenance/repairs  .

    Information 

    The total mileage can only be written once in the instrument cluster. It cannot be changed even if the counter is below 1, 000 km (620 mls). An incorrect total mileage cannot be corrected  . Make sure that the total mileage is entered correctly.

  19. Select Set total mileage  . Press F12 to continue.
    1. 19.1  Read and follow the warnings displayed on the Tester. Press F12 to continue.
    2. 19.2  Select the total mileage. Enter the value that was read out in Step  1 and press F8 to write it. Press F12 to continue.
  20. Select Write service interval  . Press F12 to continue.
    1. 20.1  Read and follow the warnings displayed on the Tester. Press F12 to continue.
    2. 20.2  Follow the instructions on the Tester. Look up and enter the servicing values from the customer service booklet. Press F12 to continue.
  21. Switch back to the Overview  menu.
  22. In the overview  , press F7 to switch to the Additional menu  .
  23. Select Function enable  . Press F12 to continue.
    1. 23.1  Select Display enabled functions  . Press F12 to continue.
    2. 23.2  The enabled functions are displayed. Follow the instructions on the Tester: Carry out restore process  and press F8.
    3. 23.3  Select Restore enabled functions  . Press F12 to continue.
    4. 23.4  Enable functions according to menu guidance.
    5. 23.5  The Tester displays the message: Restore process completed successfully.
  24. Switch back to the Overview  menu.
  25. Teach combination sensor.
    1. 25.1  Select the Airbag  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue.
    2. 25.2  Select Maintenance/repairs  .
    3. 25.3  Select Calibrate combination sensor  . Press F12 to continue.
    4. 25.4  Read and follow the warnings and instructions on the Tester.
  26. Go back to the overview  .
  27. In the overview  , press F7 to switch to the Additional menu  .
  28. Read out all fault memories  , work through faults that are stored if necessary and clear the fault memories.
  29. Exit the diagnostic application. End operational readiness on the vehicle. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
