Replacing Control Unit For Steering Wheel Electronics

NOTIFICATION 

Voltage drop 

• Irreparable damage to control unit 
• Damage to control unit 
• Fault entries in the control unit 
• Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
• Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming 
  1. → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.
  2. → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.
  3. → Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The > 9900 - PIWIS Tester 3  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms; different text or additions may appear in > 9900 -PIWIS Tester 3  .

1. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
2. Select the vehicle type if required.
3. Select the Steering wheel electronics  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
4. Coding/programming  must be selected.
5. Automatic coding  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
6. The Tester displays the message: Coding was completed successfully.
7. Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
8. Steering-angle sensor calibration  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
9. Follow the instructions on the Tester and press F8 to start.
10. The Tester displays the message: Calibration was completed successfully.
11. Read out the fault memory, correct faults that are stored if necessary and clear the fault memory.
12. Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.

Subsequent work 

Information 

On vehicles with the equipment variant heated steering wheel, multi-function steering wheel, cruise control or on-board computer, a function enable process must be carried out after replacing the steering wheel electronics control unit.

1. Determine function enabling code in PIWIS.
2. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
3. Select the vehicle type if required.
4. Select the Steering wheel electronics  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press to F11 continue.
5. Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
6. Function enable  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
7. Select function. Enter the enabling code. Press F8 to continue.
8. Read out the fault memory, correct faults that are stored if necessary and clear the fault memory.
9. Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
