External Power Connection, Jump Starting
Information
- If the battery in a BEV vehicle is flat, jump leads and a removed 12-volt lithium-ion battery can be used for jump-starting or supplying external power .
NOTE:
NOTIFICATION
External power connection or jump-lead starting
External power connection or jump-lead starting
- Jump-lead starting or using an external power supply can cause serious damage to the vehicle electronics
.
- Do not jump-start or use an external power supply.
Prerequisite for external power connection, jump-starting: The flat battery must be properly connected to the vehicle electrical system.
- Removing water box cover.

- Remove protection cap on positive terminal of the external power connection -Arrow-
.
Protection cap on positive terminal for external power connection
CAUTION: Irritant gas leaks due to damage to the 12-volt lithium battery- The use of unapproved chargers or boosters can cause the 12-volt lithium battery to be charged at too high a charge voltage and too high a charging current. This can damage the 12-volt lithium battery and irritant gases can leak out. Risk of serious damage to the vehicle and burns
.
- Only use chargers or boosters approved by the device manufacturer for LiFePO4 batteries with integrated protection electronics.
- Never exceed the following maximum values:
- Max. charging voltage 14.4 V (also in case of fault with disconnected 12 volt lithium battery; no voltage peaks permitted)
- Charging current max. 90 A
- The use of unapproved chargers or boosters can cause the 12-volt lithium battery to be charged at too high a charge voltage and too high a charging current. This can damage the 12-volt lithium battery and irritant gases can leak out. Risk of serious damage to the vehicle and burns
.
- Connect the positive cable to the positive terminal of the flat battery first, then to the positive terminal of the donor battery.
- Connect the negative cable to the ground point of the external power connection first, then to the negative terminal of the flat battery.
External power connection
- Done, vehicle: Start the engine in the vehicle with a charged battery and leave it running at high revs.
- Charge 12-volt lithium battery using an external power supply (at least 5 minutes). The electrical system is reactivated automatically.
- Operational readiness: established:
- 7.1 Disconnect negative cable at the ground point, then disconnect it at the negative terminal of the donor vehicle.
- 7.2 Disconnect positive cable at the positive terminal of the donor vehicle, then at the positive terminal of the battery.
- Push on protection cap on positive terminal of the external power/jump-start connection.
- Charge the 12-volt lithium-ion battery using > VAS 5908 - battery charger 90A .
- Install water tank cover.

- Establish driving readiness on the vehicle and check that the vehicle drives.
- Store end position of power windows.
- Teach wheels and tires in the TPM system.
