Draining Coolant
WARNING:
Hot fluid
- Danger of scalding
- Let the fluid cool down.
- Wear personal protective gear.
Information
- For work on the vehicle for which the cooling system must be opened, always drain the complete cooling system.
- This is necessary in order to ensure that the system is filled and bled correctly.
- Never disconnect partial sections when replacing individual components.
Information
- Refer to operating instructions for the > VAS 531 011 - cooling system servicing equipment for further detailed information.
- Follow the instructions on the screen of the > VAS 531 011 - cooling system servicing equipment .
- Make sure there is enough space in the DRAIN container. The DRAIN container has a capacity of 28 litres.
- Before starting the service, fill the NEW container with coolant.
- The service hose must never be disconnected from the equipment.
Information
- Before draining the cooling system, the pumps for preventing the system from running dry must be deactivated and the valves must be moved to filling position.
- Once the drain/fill mode is activated in the thermal management control unit, it remains active until the Bleed cooling system function has been performed, even when the 12 Volt battery is disconnected.
- Activate cooling system fill mode using the PIWIS Tester
.
- 1.1 Clear thermal management control unit error memory.
- 1.2 Select the Thermal management/Drain and fill cooling systems procedure in the Maintenance/repairs menu and press to continue.
- 1.3
Activate Drain and fill coolant
mode with, waiting until activation is displayed.
Information
- The amount of coolant drained should be approx. 16 to 17 litres.
- The coolant is drained at 3 positions on the vehicle: coolant hoses to the front left radiator, high-voltage battery inlet, coolant hoses for rear axle final drive.
- Always comply with the specifications for compressed air!
- Unscrew cap -1-
on the coolant reservoir.
Coolant reservoir cap
- Connect the service hose to the coolant reservoir adapter and to the compressed air coupling connection on the > VAS 531 011 - cooling system servicing equipment .
- Drain coolant at the rear drive axle plug-in coupling
.
- 4.1 Position the > VAS 531 011 - cooling system servicing equipment under the connection point to collect the coolant.
- 4.2 Select Vehicle maintenance in the main menu and select Drain system .
- 4.3
Pull plug-in coupling -1-
at the bottom out of holder -2-
. Pull spring clamp -3-
until it engages and detach plug-in coupling.
Drain coolant through funnel.
Do not open the upper plug connection!
Coolant hoses for rear drive axle
- 4.4 Close off front coolant hose -4- using > 3093 - hose clamp .
- 4.5 Select Vehicle maintenance in the main menu and select Drain system .
- 4.6 Follow the on-screen instructions and blow out coolant until there are only drops of coolant or air flows out.
- 4.7 Follow the on-screen instruction down arrow in Drain system .
- 4.8 This step can be repeated several times.
- 4.9 Remove > 3093 - hose clamp on the front coolant hose -4- and close off the rear coolant hose -5- .
- 4.10 Repeat Drain system procedure.
- 4.11 Follow the on-screen instructions and blow out coolant until there are only drops of coolant or air flows out.
- 4.12 Follow the on-screen instruction down arrow in Drain system .
- 4.13 This step can be repeated several times.
- 4.14 Close plug-in coupling, lock spring clamp and remove > 3093 - hose clamp .
- Drain coolant at the high voltage battery inlet
.
Cover nearby components with protective sheeting!
- 5.1 Position the > VAS 531 011 - cooling system servicing equipment under the connection point to collect the coolant.
- 5.2
Disconnect plug-in coupling -1-
at the connection piece to the high-voltage battery (do not remove). Pull spring clamp -2-
downwards until it engages.

- 5.3
Position > VAS 6675A - funnel -1-
under plug-in coupling -2-
. Remove plug-in coupling and drain coolant through the funnel.
Special "flexible" funnel
- 5.4 Then, close off the coolant hose using > 3093 - hose clamp .
- 5.5
To make it easier to drain the system, insert a transparent 16 mm hose -1-
into connection opening -2-
and allow coolant to drain though the funnel.

- 5.6 Select Vehicle maintenance in the main menu and select Drain system .
- 5.7 Follow the on-screen instructions and blow out coolant until there are only drops of coolant or air flows out.
- 5.8 Follow the on-screen instruction down arrow in Drain system .
- 5.9 This step can be repeated several times.
- 5.10 Close plug-in coupling on connection piece for high-voltage battery input and lock spring clamp.
- Drain coolant at the front left radiator
.
Coolant hoses on front radiator
- 6.1 Position the > VAS 531 011 - cooling system servicing equipment under the connection point to collect the coolant.
- 6.2 Open spring band clamp -2- and detach coolant hose Allow the coolant to run through the funnel.
- 6.3 Close off coolant hose -1- using > 3093 - hose clamp .
- 6.4
