Checking The Cooling System For Leaks
WARNING:
Hot fluid
- Danger of scalding
- Let the fluid cool down.
- Wear personal protective gear.
WARNING:
Caustic fluids
- Danger of chemical burns
- Wear personal protective gear.
- Ensure that there is good ventilation.
- Avoid contact with caustic fluid.
- If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.
WARNING:
Coolant outlet in the high-voltage battery
- Risk of short circuit or fire
- Read out the fault memory of all high-voltage systems before checking the pressure of the cooling system.
- In the event of an insulation fault, do not apply pressure to the cooling system.
- In the event of an insulation fault, have a high-voltage expert take care of the issue.
Tools:
- > 9900 - PIWIS Tester 3
- > V.A.G 1274B/15 - Adapter for cooling system tester
Cooling system leak test:
- Only leak-test the system when the coolant is cold.
- Move valve into service position using the PIWIS Tester.
- 2.1 Connect the PIWIS Tester to the vehicle and start the PIWIS Tester. Switch on ignition.
- 2.2 Start the diagnostic software.
- 2.3 Select "Thermal management" control unit.
- 2.4 Select the Maintenance/repairs tab.
- 2.5 Select the "Check cooling system" procedure by pressing F12.
- 2.6 Follow the instructions on the Tester.
- Unscrew cap on the coolant reservoir.
- Fit adapter KS65 on coolant reservoir.
- Connect > V.A.G 1274B - cooling system tester to the adapter.
- Use the pump to create overpressure of 1.1 bar in the cooling system.
- Visually check hose and line connections for leaks.
- Carry out the required repair work to seal any leaks you find.
- Relieve pressure at the pump and screw off the adapter.
- Fit cap securely on coolant reservoir.
- Stop the Check cooling system
procedure by pressing F8.
Leak-testing the pressure relief valve:
- Screw adapter KS65 onto the coolant reservoir.
- Connect > V.A.G 1274B - cooling system tester to the adapter.
- Disconnect vent line on pressure relief valve for coolant reservoir.
- Use the pump to create overpressure of 1.6 bar (cover 0.9 bar) in the cooling system. The pressure relief value opens and the pressure in the cooling system must not increase any more.
- If the pressure increases, the pressure relief valve must be replaced.
