Repairing Rear Wheel Bearing Housing

Information 

All tasks required during thread repairs must be done manually.

Cutting oil must be used during thread repairs.

Never use tools to secure the assembly aid. The screw on the assembly aid must be screwed in by hand.

Information 

The wheel bearing housing can remain installed during thread repairs.

  1. Remove rear brake disc cover plate -1-  .
    1. 1.1  Unscrew screws -2-  .
    2. 1.2  Remove rear brake disc cover plate -1-  .

    CAUTION: Electrically moved components 
    • Danger of limbs being trapped 

      → Switch off electric power to drive motor.

      → Make sure it does not switch on again.

      → Check that there is no electric charge.

    Information 

    Once PDCC is ready for operation, chassis adjustments can be made. To avoid injury/crushing, only work near the anti-roll bar, lower trailing arms and bellows of the steering gear without establishing operational readiness and always allow for the run-on time of 60 seconds.

  2. Fit assembly aid -1-  from > VAS 6627A - brake calliper repair kit  on the wheel bearing housing -2-  .
    1. 2.1  Fit assembly aid -1-  on wheel bearing housing -2-  .
    2. 2.2  Screw assembly aid -3-  into the intact thread by hand.

  3. Drill out defective thread.
    1. 3.1  Fit guide sleeve into assembly aid.
    2. 3.2  Drill out thread by hand using cutting iron holder and drill bit.
    3. 3.3  Unscrew screw and remove assembly aid > VAS 6627A - brake calliper repair kit  .
    4. 3.4  Remove drilling chips from the bore using compressed air.
  4. Countersink the bore hole as far as required using seat miller from > VAS 6627/9 - thread repair kit, M14 x 1.5  until the depth stop is touching.
  5. Check countersink depth.
    1. 5.1  Insert M12 threaded bush into the bore in the opposite direction to the screw-in direction.
    2. 5.2  Check that the first thread of the threaded bush M12 is seated fully in the counterbore. Rework counterbore if necessary.
  6. Fit assembly aid -1-  from > VAS 6627A - brake calliper repair kit  on the wheel bearing housing -2-  .
    1. 6.1  Fit assembly aid -1-  with guide sleeve on the wheel bearing housing -2-  .
    2. 6.2  Screw assembly aid -3-  into the intact thread by hand.

      Information 

      The guide sleeve is sticking out slightly out of the assembly sleeve before cutting the thread.

      The guide sleeve will settle during the cutting process.

  7. Cut thread.
    1. 7.1  Coat the tap with cutting oil and insert it into the guide sleeve.
    2. 7.2  Fit cutting iron holder on the tap and carefully cut the thread as far as the stop by hand.
  8. Unscrew screw and remove assembly aid from > VAS 6627A - brake calliper repair kit  .
  9. Countersink the bore hole again as far as required using seat miller from > VAS 6627/9 - thread repair kit, M14 x 1.5  until the depth stop is touching.
  10. Fit assembly aid -1-  from > VAS 6627A - brake calliper repair kit  on the wheel bearing housing -2-  .
    1. 10.1  Fit assembly aid -1-  with guide sleeve on the wheel bearing housing -2-  .
    2. 10.2  Screw assembly aid -3-  into the intact thread by hand.

      Information

  11. Cut the thread again.
    1. 11.1  Coat the tap with cutting oil and insert it into the guide sleeve.
    2. 11.2  Fit cutting iron holder on the tap and carefully cut the thread as far as the stop by hand.
  12. Check countersink depth again.
    1. 12.1  Insert M12 threaded bush into the bore in the opposite direction to the screw-in direction.
    2. 12.2  Check that the first thread of the threaded bush is seated fully in the counterbore. Rework counterbore if necessary.
  13. Only if the counterbore was reworked again: 

    Fit assembly aid -1-  from > VAS 6627A - brake calliper repair kit  on the wheel bearing housing -2-  .

    1. 13.1  Fit assembly aid -1-  with guide sleeve on the wheel bearing housing -2-  .
    2. 13.2  Screw assembly aid -3-  into the intact thread by hand.

      Information

  14. Only if the counterbore was reworked again: 

    Cut the thread again.

    1. 14.1  Coat the tap with cutting oil and insert it into the guide sleeve.
    2. 14.2  Fit cutting iron holder on the tap and carefully cut the thread as far as the stop by hand.
  15. Only if the counterbore was reworked again: 

    Unscrew screw and remove assembly aid from > VAS 6627A - brake calliper repair kit  .

  16. Only if the counterbore was reworked again: 

    Countersink the bore hole again as far as required using seat miller from > VAS 6627/9 - thread repair kit, M14 x 1.5  until the depth stop is touching.

  17. Clean the thread using brake cleaner and compressed air.
  18. Install threaded bush.
    1. 18.1  Screw in M12 threaded bush as far as possible by hand.
    2. 18.2  Oil screw-in tool from > VAS 6627/9 - thread repair kit, M14 x 1.5  and fit it on the threaded bush.
    3. 18.3  Screw in threaded bush as far as possible by hand using screw-in tool from > VAS 6627/9 - thread repair kit, M14 x 1.5  .
    4. 18.4  Continue to screw in the threaded bush using screw-in tool from > VAS 6627/9 - thread repair kit, M14 x 1.5  and cutting iron holder until you feel increased screw-in resistance.
    5. 18.5  Continue to screw in the screw-in tool from > VAS 6627/9 - thread repair kit, M14 x 1.5  using cutting iron holder until the screw-in resistance becomes lighter.
      WARNING: Threaded bush sticking out of wheel bearing housing  .
      • Brake calliper can become loose  .

        → The contact surface of the brake calliper must be flush with the contact surface of the wheel bearing housing.

        → The brake calliper must not be supported on the threaded bush.

        → There must be NO gap between the brake calliper and wheel bearing housing.

  19. Check that the threaded bush is fitted correctly.
    1. 19.1  Unscrew screw-in tool from > VAS 6627/9 - thread repair kit, M14 x 1.5  .
    2. 19.2  Check that the threaded bush is fitted at least 0.2 mm  lower than the contact surface in the bore. Continue to screw in the threaded bush if necessary.

      Information 

      The thread must be free of oil and grease.

      The thread must be free of chips.

  20. Clean the thread using brake cleaner and compressed air.
  21. Install rear brake cover plate -1-  .
    1. 21.1  Fit rear brake cover plate -1-  .
    2. 21.2  Screw in and tighten screws -2-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.)
