Installing Trailing Arm

Information

Information 

Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.

1. Install trailing arm -1-  .
   1. 1.1  Position trailing arm -1-  .
   2. 1.2  Secure trailing arm -1-  on wheel bearing housing -2-  .
      1. 1.2.1  Insert new  screw -8-  .
      2. 1.2.2  Fit new  nut -7-  , but do not tighten yet.
   3. 1.3  Secure trailing arm -1-  to rear axle housing.
      1. 1.3.1  Insert new  eccentric screw -10-  .
      2. 1.3.2  Insert eccentric washer -11-  with angle position marking facing outwards.
      3. 1.3.3  Fit new  nut -9-  , but do not tighten yet.
      4. 1.3.4  Insert new  screw -13-  .
      5. 1.3.5  Fit new  nut -12-  , but do not tighten yet.
   4. 1.4  Secure trailing arm -1-  on shock absorber -3-  and connecting link -4-  .
      1. 1.4.1  Insert new  screw -6-  .
      2. 1.4.2  Fit new  nut -5-  , but do not tighten yet.

   WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly 

   • Risk of crushing 
   • Risk of damage to components 

     → Wear personal protective gear.

     → Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

   Information 

   On vehicles with air suspension system, the air spring bellows must be aligned with the trailing arm when raising the wheel bearing housing.

   • The air suspension bellows must be inserted with the cable -1- into the groove -2-  .
   • The spacer -3- is only fitted in Cross Turismo vehicles  .
2. Lift the wheel suspension to zero position using lifting equipment (> VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  ).

3. Tighten screws/bolts for trailing arm -1-  .
   1. 3.1  Tighten nut -7-  and counter at screw -8-  .

      > Tightening torque 70 Nm 

      > Torque angle + 180 ° 

   2. 3.2  Tighten nut -5-  and counter at screw -6-  .

      > Tightening torque 70 Nm 

      > Torque angle + 180 ° 

   3. 3.3  Position eccentric threaded joint on the marking and tighten nut -9-  while countering at the eccentric screw -10-  .

      > Tightening torque 160 Nm 

   4. 3.4  Tighten nut -12-  and counter at screw -13-  .

      > Tightening torque 70 Nm 

      > Torque angle + 180 °

4. Secure rear level sensor holder -1-  to the trailing arm -2-  .
   1. 4.1  Position rear level sensor holder -1-  with retaining lug -4-  on the trailing arm -2-  .
   2. 4.2  Fit and tighten new  screw -3-  .

      > Initial tightening 3 Nm (2 ftlb.) 

      > Final tightening 45 °
