Replacing Rear-Axle Bearing (Front)

WARNING: Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic press 
  • Risk of squashing 

    → Read specific safety information for the press.

    → Check that the press is working perfectly before use, particularly the safety components.

  1. Spray bearing seat with anti-rust agent before pressing it out to make it easier to pull off the bearing.

    Allow anti-rust agent to work.

    Information 

    • The marking on the bearing housing always points to the rear in direction of travel  .
  2. Mark the position of the (front) bearing using the recess -1-  on the rear axle housing.

    The following tools are required for removing and pressing in the bearing: 

    • > 9698/1 - Assembly fixture  , spindle and nut from > 9698 - assembly fixture  set
    • > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder 
    • > VAS 6179 - Foot pump 
    • Optional:  > VAS 6179/1 - Pressure Gauge with Connection Line 

      Information 

      The help of another person is required.

  3. Tool positioning pressure piece 9698/1-5 -1-  , insert and sleeve.
    1. 3.1 9698/1-5  pressure piece -1-  must be positioned exactly!

    2. 3.2  Position of insert 9698/1-3 -1-  on lower bearing: Align narrow recess -X- (dimension X approx. 53 mm) on the bearing housing -2-  .

      1  Pressure piece 9698/1-5 
      2  front bearing
      3  Insert 9698/1-3 
      4  Sleeve 9698/1-1 
      5  Threaded spindle with nut from assembly fixture 9698 
  4. Press out the front bearing.

    1  Pressure piece 9698/1-5 
    2  Insert 9698/1-3 
    3  Sleeve 9698/1-1 
    4  > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder 
    1. 4.1  Centre pressure piece 9698/1-5 -1-  on front bearing.
    2. 4.2  Fit insert 9698/1-3 -2-  on sleeve 9698/1-1 -3-  and centre it on the contact surface of the rear axle housing.
    3. 4.3  Press out front bearing using > VAS 6178 - hydraulic cylinder-4-  at setting 1.
  5. Carefully de-burr edges -1-  of the recesses in the bearing seat.

    1. 5.1  Clean the bearing seat and polish it with fine sandpaper if necessary.
    2. 5.2  Lightly grease bearing seat with Kluber Syntheso Glep  .
  6. Fit fixing device 9698/1-8 -1-  with threaded pin 9698/1-9 -2-  on front bearing -3-  .

    1. 6.1  Make a coloured marking on the bearing housing in the extension of the recess -Line-  .
  7. Fit new bearing (front) -2-  with fixing device -3-  on the rear axle housing -1-  . Observe markings -Lines-  .

    Positioning bearing with fixing device

    Information 

    Overpressing the bearing can damage the rubber. The bearing must be replaced in this case.

  8. Carefully press in front bearing using > VAS 6178 - hydraulic cylinder  at setting 1.
    1. 8.1  Position pressure piece 9698/1-6  with spindle and nut on the bearing mount from above.
    2. 8.2  Push hydraulic cylinder with sleeve 9698/1-1  over the spindle. Fit with spacer and nut and allow the helper to hold the hydraulic cylinder in position.
    3. 8.3  Press the front bearing in as far as required until there is no gap between the rubber and the contact surface of the rear axle housing.
