Replacing Ear-Axle Bearing (Rear)

Information
- The marking on the bearing housing always points to the rear in direction of travel .
The following tools are required for removing and pressing in the bearing:
- > 9698/1 - Assembly fixture , spindle and nut from > 9698 - assembly fixture
- > 9698/2 - Pressure piece
- > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder
- > VAS 6179 - Foot pump
- Optional: > VAS 6179/1 - Pressure Gauge with Connection Line
- Spray bearing seat with anti-rust agent before pressing it out to make it easier to pull off the bearing.
Allow anti-rust agent to work.
- Mark the position of the recess -1-
on the rear axle housing -Pin-

The help of another person is required.
- Press out rear bearing using the specified tools.
Tools for rear bearing
1 Spindle with nut from > 9698 - assembly fixture 2 Pressure piece 9698/1-6 3 > 9698/2 - Pressure piece 4 Sleeve 9698/1-1 5 > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder 6 Spacer (optional) for better securing of the spindle → N-marking - 3.1 Fit pressure piece 9698/1-6 -2- at the top of the rear bearing with spindle -1- and nut and centre it.

Position > 9698/2 - pressure piece-2-
at the bottom of the bearing and align it on the contact surface of the rear axle housing.

from below on pressure piece 9698/2 -1-

Information
The help of another person is required.
- 3.4 Push > VAS 6178 - hydraulic cylinder onto the spindle and secure with spacer and nut.
- 3.5 Press out rear bearing using > VAS 6178 - hydraulic cylinder at setting 1.
- Carefully de-burr edges -1-
of the recesses in the bearing seat.

- 4.1 Clean the bearing seat and polish it with fine sandpaper if necessary.

Lightly grease bearing seat with Kluber Syntheso Glep

Securing (rear) bearing
- 5.1 Align markings -Arrows- .
- 5.2 Screw four pins 9698/1-9 -2- into washer 9698/1-8 -3- (position A).
- 5.3 Secure bearing -1- in the tool.
- Bearing position for pressing in the bearing (rear), markings on the bearing (rear) and on the rear axle housing must be aligned -Arrows-

Overpressing the bearing can damage the rubber. The bearing must be replaced in this case.
- Press in -2-
rear bearing.
Tool arrangement for rear bearing
1 Pressure piece 9698/1-7 2 Rear bearing 3 Pin 9698/1-9 (4 ea.) 4 Washer 9698/1-8 5 > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder - 7.1 Centre pressure piece 9698/1-7 -1- with spindle and nut on the contact surface of the rear axle housing.
- 7.2 Centre bearing -2- with fixing device (9698/1-9 pin -3- with 9698/1-8 washer -4- ) on the bearing seat.
- 7.3 Slowly press in rear bearing -2- using > VAS 6178 - hydraulic cylinder-5- at setting 1.

Press the rear bearing -1-
in as far as required until there is no gap between the rubber and the contact surface of the rear axle housing.
