Replacing Rear Axle Housing

The procedure for removing and installing is described for one side as an example. The procedure for the other side is almost identical.

1. Unscrew screws -1-  and remove rear wiring harness holder -2-  .

2. Unscrew screws -1-  and remove wiring harness holder at the side -2-  .

3. Remove upper control arm at the front -1-  .
   1. 3.1  Unscrew nut -2-  and counter at screw -3-  at the same time.
   2. 3.2  Remove screw -3-  and remove upper control arm at the front -1-  .

4. Remove upper control arm at the rear -1-  .
   1. 4.1  Unscrew nut -2-  and counter at screw -3-  at the same time.
   2. 4.2  Remove screw -3-  and remove upper control arm at the rear -1-  .

      Information

5. Remove trailing arm -1-  .
   1. 5.1  Mark the position of the eccentric screws -9 to 11-  .
   2. 5.2  Unscrew nut -9-  and counter at the eccentric screw -10-  .

      Replace eccentric screw and nut.

   3. 5.3  Remove eccentric screw -10-  and eccentric washer -11-  .
   4. 5.4  Unscrew nut -12-  and counter at screw -13-  at the same time.

      Replace screw and nut.

   5. 5.5  Remove screw -13-  and remove trailing arm -1-  .

6. Unclip clips -1 and 2-  .

7. Unscrew screw -1-  and unclip and remove bracket for Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM) control unit -2-  .

8. Depending on equipment: 

   Remove rear axle steering -1-  or cross member.

   1. 8.1  Unscrew screws in the sequence -5 to 2-  .

      Replace screws.

   2. 8.2  Remove rear axle steering -1-  or cross member.
   3. 8.3 Only for vehicles with cross member: 

      Remove spacers.

9. Have new rear axle housing ready.

   Information 

   The cross member must be installed with the component marking at the left in direction of travel.

10. Depending on equipment: 

    Install rear axle steering -1-  or cross member.

    1. 10.1 Only for vehicles with cross member: 

       Position spacers.

    2. 10.2  Position rear axle steering -1-  or cross member.
    3. 10.3  Screw in new  screws -2 to 5-  by hand.
    4. 10.4  Tighten screws in the sequence -2 to 5-  .

       > Tightening torque 70 Nm (52 ftlb.) 

       > Torque angle + 90 °

11. Clip in bracket for Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TPM) control unit -2-  and fit and tighten screw -1-  .

    > Tightening torque 4.5 Nm (3.25 ftlb.)

12. Clip in clips -1 and 2-  .

    Clips

    Information 

    The threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position! If this is not done, the mounts can become warped. This step is performed after installing the rear axle.

13. Install trailing arm -1-  .
    1. 13.1  Position trailing arm -1-  .
    2. 13.2  Insert new  eccentric screw -10-  .
    3. 13.3  Insert eccentric washer -11-  with marking angle facing outwards.
    4. 13.4  Screw on new  nut -9-  , but do not tighten yet.
    5. 13.5  Insert new  screw -13-  .
    6. 13.6  Screw on new  nut -12-  , but do not tighten yet.

15. Install upper control arm at the front -1-  .
    1. 15.1  Position upper control arm at the front -1-  .
    2. 15.2  Insert screw -3-  and screw on nut -2-  , but do not tighten yet.

16. Position wiring harness holder at the side -2-  and fit and tighten screws -1-  .

    > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.)
