Removing Rear Axle

WARNING: Incorrect handling of high-voltage components 
  • Electric shock 
  • Short circuit 
  • Fire 
  • Explosion 

    → Only appropriately trained and authorised persons are permitted to work on high-voltage vehicles and components.

    → Required qualification: High voltage technician or high voltage expert.

    → Observe national requirements and legislation for this work.

    → Always use insulated tools, e.g. > VAS 6883 - Insulated Tool Set  when working on these components. Observe general warning notes for working on the high-voltage system.

    > 2X00IN GENERAL WARNING NOTES FOR WORKING ON THE HIGH-VOLTAGE SYSTEM

  1. Remove brackets -1-  on both sides of the vehicle.

    Brackets

    1. 1.1 Only on right side: 

      Unclip clip -2-  and move electric line aside.

    2. 1.2  Unscrew and remove screws -3 and 4-  .
    3. 1.3  Remove brackets -1-  .
  2. Loosen electric wire harness -1-  on both sides of the vehicle.

    Electric wire harness

    1. 2.1  Release and disconnect electric plug connections -2 and 3-  and unclip from holders -4-  .
    2. 2.2  Unclip clip -5-  .
    3. 2.3  Set electric wire harness -1-  aside.
  3. Disconnect air line -1-  from rear axle housing.

    1. 3.1  Cut tie-wrap -2-  .
    2. 3.2  Unclip air line -1-  from clip -3-  and move it aside.
  4. Unclip clip -1-  and set electric line -2-  aside.

  5. Disconnect coolant hoses -1 and 2-  .

    Coolant hoses

    1. 5.1  Disengage coolant hoses -1 and 2-  from bracket -3-  .
    2. 5.2  Release and disconnect quick connectors -4-  .
    3. 5.3  Catch escaping coolant and close off line connections using suitable stoppers.
    4. 5.4  Set coolant hoses -1 and 2-  aside.
  6. > VAS 6832/11 - Assembly device for rear axle  must be positioned under the vehicle on > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  and fitted on the rear axle.
  7. Unscrew screws -2-  on the front electric motor mountings -1-  .

  8. Unscrew screws -2-  on the rear electric motor mountings -1-  .

    Information 

    You will need a second mechanic to help you with this step.

  9. Remove rear axle -1-  .

    Rear axle

    1. 9.1  Unscrew screws on rear axle bearing -2-  .
    2. 9.2  Tilt and lower the rear axle -1-  together with the electric motor as required and guide it down out of the vehicle.

      Get another person to help by checking that all components have sufficient clearance.
